the male died in 2010 and he was the last in North America: https://www.facebook.com/689647275/posts/10152328803367276

I don't know about the female that was with him (the article above doesn't mention her) but I think she died earlier.

What a memorial! Thanks for the sad news, that's what I've expected :( Maybe some year I must travel to Japan to see it (I want to see whale sharks at Tokyo aquarium too!) Do you know how old is the Yokohama bulwer's pheasant?

Dear zoochatters,
Yesterday I went finally to SDZ. It was a great experience but a bit disappointing for me, as I missed a lot of dreamed especies from the list of DavidBrown. Some just hidden like Storm,s stork, some from enclosures under construction-remodelation, and many, many apparently disappeared forever, from coconut crab to green broadbill. And also many species that I was able to see but not to photograph as they were in very bad position or in very bad places of the enclosures (fossa, fennecs, tentacled snake, etc...) In fact, most especies exhibits are very uninviting for photographs. The very worst thing was that, by my surprise, the animal that I wanted more to see here, the star of the zoo, the symbol of SDZ for me, was off-exhibit because enclosure was remodelating... So I miss the unique California Condor. I will not visit SafariPark because there is not public transport.
But I must be positive... I got a lot of pics of interesting species, and I hope to get many more in next days. Probably is better to ser things without planning first, so one doesn,t expect certain species and don,t miss them.
By the other hand, I,m in love with San Diego and the extreme kindness of every people that I talked with! Also saw my first wild hummingbirds (it,s my first time in America).

CGSwans got there by public transport last year: http://www.zoochat.com/22/american-adventures-2015-a-419501/index3.html

c) Believe it or not, I managed to get out to the Safari Park via public transport. It required being up at about 5:30 or so in the morning (I'd say I felt bad for my hostel roommate, but he was a really rude guy so I happily set my alarm to go off), and getting three buses. The first took me across San Diego to an interchange on a freeway. The second took me along said freeway. The third was one of I think only two services that stopped at the zoo each morning, with another 2 heading back. It put me at the zoo about an hour before opening time, so I had to sit and read a book as staff arrived and went inside, no doubt a bit baffled to see me there. Nobody else arrived by bus that day, and I was the only passenger on the return bus too.

Thanks for the reply chlidonias. Anyway it seems too complicated and one needs to wake up very early.
Now I saw most things that I can reach myself (today I went to La Jolla for seals, brandt's cormorant, brown pelican, wild California sea lions, some marine inverts and a nice swallowtail butterfly, I also saw a garibaldi). I only lack birch aquarium and botanical house.
I would be very happy if some zoo-lover from San Diego plan to visit next days any of the places that I cannot reach by bus, and take me with him. I'll stay until 14th july and would be interested in any of these:
Safaripark
Botanical garden
Los angeles zoo
rancho la brea museum (LA)
Newport beach for take a whale watching tour (I hace a discount that would be a shame to waste)

I,m housed at pamo avenue, if somebody lives near here.
Thanks,
Isidro

Are lammergeiers naturally occurring in Spain?

Yes, they are. Mainly in Pyrenees mountains and Cantabrian mountains but they has been reintroduced in southern mountains like Sierra Nevada. I think the best place to see them is Ordesa.

If your stay at San Diego is more or less about visiting zoological institutions, I recommend you to purchase a 3-in-1-Pass (available at the Zoo, Safari Park and SeaWorld). With this pass you can visit those 3 parks as often as you want WITHIN ONE WEEK). It's about 165 USD, if I remember correctly.

My aapologies for bumping an old thread, but....

Does anyone know whether this week's pass is still available? I can only find details for a 2016 ticket online, and wonder whether, possibly, the zoo / safari park were reluctant, now, to link themselves to the potentially toxic Seaworld brand.
