Please sign The UK Petition To Get Government Funding For Zoos

As the numbers go up (73,000 now), the map is showing an interesting midlands split, with an expected (?) raft of support from the Nuneaton area through to Chester and and clusters around large zoos with lots of staff and supporters like Whipsnade. The level of support for it is lower, sometimes much lower, in cities like London, Bristol, Oxford, Cambridge, Peterborough, Doncaster, Cheltenham, Cardiff etc. Notice too though, that the colours keep changing downwards as the percentage categories to attain a darker colour keep being shifted upwards.

I believe the debate is regarding re-opening where as this petition is about funding.
Yes, the Parliamentary debate appears to have been secured by BIAZA and is ref re-opening.
This petition appears to have been running since April, well before the current publicity, and has only recently picked up momentum.

They just tipped the 100,000 mark, I see the area around Twycross is the heaviest signed
Yes, as I said above - generally a swathe through middle England, heaviest from Twycross to Chester as would be expected from their media presence. Quite low to very low participation in cites like Doncaster, Bristol, London, Edinburgh, Oxford, Nottingham, Leicester, Cambridge, Peterborough etc.

I see Hamerton's constituency also has 100 more signatures than the constituencies around it ;)
Also, the colour coding on the map is a bit strange. Delyn, in North-East Wales has 289 signatures, yet is a tone darker than North-West Cambridgeshire, which has 331. Not sure how that works...

I think the problem with London is that there is only really one zoo and no-one from the area really goes there, whereas zoos in the countryside are much more part of the constituency's identity, especially larger ones like Chester and Twycross. The constituency with the most signatures however is Waveney is Norfolk, which is near Banham, Africa Alive etc.

I've been watching the categories as the votes mount up and their percentages continually change (upwards) and some constituencies which were darker, drop to a paler colour not because their percentage of signatures drop, but because the parameters change.
I think your example of Delyn/North-West Cambs is down to the number of votes divided into the the number of constituents, this gives the rolling percentage which is continually adjusted.
Waveney shows that there must have been some strong maybe organised support, along with areas around other middle England zoos. The two constituencies north and south of us are both well within catchment, and are poor (Huntingdon) and very poor (Peterborough) and there are weaker areas south down past Linton and Shepreth too.
All of this is interesting, if possibly/probably statistically insignificant - but the poor showing of cities and the north and south of the country is noticeable.

This email trail we had earlier today might be of interest...

Question:
I know a few people who haven't signed the petition or have not donated because of the claim of no funding when they are aware of government funding...just for your info. I'll let them know your answer!
All the very best

Answer:
Dear …
The petition probably pre-dates any announcement on funding.
Regarding the funding: -
The Government announced £100m for zoos when Boris Johnson was ill.
This was reduced to £14m when he recovered. This is called the ‘ZooFund’.
Each application is now capped - to just over 20 days basic running costs in our case.
It seems that most zoo applications are being rejected. There are over 400 zoos in the UK, but we have only heard of one which has received anything and the amount has not been published.
This may be why the petition has now had such strong support.
All our best, HZP

Okay guys I did had an email just now and unfortunately the petition Let zoo's and wildlife parks Reopen as soon as possible has been rejected and that is not what we're looking for so we're now going to Plan B which will be a new petition and it's called
Allow Zoos and Wildlife attractions to reopen with social distancing in place
Petition: Allow Zoos and Wildlife attractions to reopen with social distancing in place

Signed, along with my parents.

Good news though, the second and third most popular petitions are the Zoo funding and reopening petitions, with 1707 and 649 signatures in the last hour respectively!

Good to know that a lot of people care about them (already 1534 signatures).

Why would you want to start yet another petition, and risk taking away support for the first?
