ZOO Plzeň Plzen zoo news

Hi everyone,

I am planning a visit to Plzen from England in the summer. I know that some members here have been able to see some of the off-show species by emailing Mr. Vobruba and asking politely.

Has anyone got any experience with this? I'd be most interested in seeing unusual small mammals and birds, but would be incredibly grateful if it was a possibility.

I went backstage in 2016 and saw a lot of rare bird and a few mammal species
Went backstage again in 2018, but the behind the scenes area had almost been emptied because of renovations. Just a few birds and mammals (mostly mouse-like rodents) were left to see there.
Not sure how the situation is currently.

Thank you - might email him closer to the time and ask if it is possible, then!

Another new species is Amazilia hummingbird
Interesting, and very unexpected! Do you know where in the zoo these are kept (or will be kept, if they're off-show currently)? The only potential places I could see hummingbirds are in the giraffe/rhino house or in the Philippines/snake house, but hummingbirds would be weird in the geographical context of both houses!

They are in the rhino house.

In September 2018 the situation was similar but the Goodman's Mouse Lemurs, Panay Bushy-Tailed Cloud Rats, and various rodents and birds not on-exhibit were still back there. There is a small reptile room as well but one needs to request to see that separately. Thankfully most of the animals no longer kept there are now on-exhibit across the zoo.

This will sooner or later change as there are reconstruction works scheduled and the scheme of the off-show area will change (Or at least that was my last info on this matter). The only issue now is securing funds for it.

With Antwerp closing its nocturnal house, Plzen has received an Aardvark from there, which is apparently housed in the Africa house in the Springhare exhibit (which personally strikes me as much too small for an Aardvark).

And wait when there will be two of them...:D

It's enlarged for the former pouched rat exhibit, which serves as den. And the view for the future is that they will be able to use the Jackal exhibit as well.

• Western tree hyraxes will arrive from Ostrava in the coming weeks.

• All Panay cloudrunners in captivity are now situated in Plzen, the last male from Prague arrived last weekend

• discussion started about using the jackal exhibit for aardvarks, there is a possibility that the exhibit will be netted over, so the aardvarks can be accompanied by Garnett's galagos, another option is some small carnivore species (wors case scenario - meerkat).

• No updates on Elephant house construction
