Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Port Lympne black rhino

The black rhinos featured on 'Roar' today , probably filmed last autumn . Kingo was running with Vuyu and Jaga and had mated both . Nick Turk , the rhino head keeper , thought they were both pregnant though not confirmed at that time .

Is there any news on the rhino/baboon mixed exhibit I've heard of?

It's apparently been going on for ages, and I went about 3 weeks ago and the rhino fences had insulators for electric wire, but it wasn't completed and the babboons were in their cage.

That is exactly how it was last Autumn, so there has been no work done on this at all in the intervening months.

Watching roar on Iplayer and 1.0 black rhino Kingo has been sent to the Dvur Kralove zoo.

Are you confident on this?

Kingo has been sent temp to PL for breeding purposes while the mother and calf at Paignton mature. In the full 1,5-2 year term Kingo was to remain at PL. Perhaps you have mistaken him for Baringo II - who was shipped out to Dvur not too unrecently -.

Regards,

K.B.

The rhino sent was referred to as Ringo , aged 16 years , so I assume it was Baringo II .

My apologies for posting the wrong name, Bele you are right and it looked a very young animal, also sent to the Czech republic along with the rhino was a fishing cat too, do Dvur Kralove display fishing cat?

I wonder if they will receive a Dvur bull in return? Apart from Quinto, many of their rhinos are becoming closely related and another completely unrelated bull would be useful for them.

This might occur over time, but in the immediate future no plans exist for this to happen. For now, PL is happy with both Quinto and Kingo.

I do however agree that at some point the EEP - both continental en UK populations - need infusion of new genes. Effectively, that might come from the SSP .... :D

A female Black Rhino named Nyoto was born 6 weeks ago - nice photo in 'Daily Telegraph' but no further details .

This is very good news , the first birth for several years .

Any idea who the parents are?

Presumably this is the first calf fathered by 'Kingo' since he was returned from Paignton Zoo.

Is this the correct lists of rhinos held at the park

Kingo M
Vuyu F
Nyoto F
Damara F
Jaga F
Etna F
Grumeti F
Solio F
Ruaha F
Monduli M
Nakuru F
Arusha F
Salome F

Rukwa F
Manyara M
Zambesi M

Fell free to add to the list if i have missed anyone out or take out rhinos no longer at the park many thanks :)

Do they still have Quinto? He came to Port Lyme on loan from Chester in September 2008.

She is the only one left of their original trio;

Wildcaught females; Rukwa & Naivasha
Zoobred male 'Ringo/Baringo', only Black Rhino ever born at Dublin.
(Baringo's parents were both also zooborn, male at Bristol and female at Rotterdam.)

@ Pertinax. True.

Earlier queries: Quinto has now become a successful breeding male at PL.
Katakata remains in France and I consider it just to have relocated him out of PL (he was not breeding there).
