Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Port Lympne Wild Animal Park News 2024

Despite what many may feel about Damian. I would not urge people not to visit his parks. Most would agree they both potential to be 2 of the best parks in south but poor management holds them back but to say don’t visit the staff need paying so does the animals.

I do agree with Tim. The power he and his cronies had over the last Government could have proved terminal for UK zoos. It was the biggest near-miss of our lifetimes and so much closer than anyone on here seems to realise.

Incidentally, I think this would be the lesser option, his first option would be to "rewild" said breeding pair straight away :p
It’s really quite egregious that he keeps referring to release programmes as ‘rewilding’. I’m by no means the first to point out that rewilding is supposed to refer to an active reestablishment of an entire ecosystem through multiple means and different species, and is only being used in this context because it’s become a bit of a buzzword.

In an interview somewhere he's quoted as wanting to 'rewild' every single tropical marine fish in captivity and I would love to know how he plans to go about that. One pictures him tipping endless buckets of 'designer' Clownfish into the sea at Hythe.

I'm visiting next Monday and I have wondered for a while now. Does anyone know why the truck Safari is not included on the map?. I know it used to be featured on the maps but I wonder why it was taken off.

Also what are the best ways to see the Water Buffalo, Takin, Wildebeest, Axis Deer, Sambars, Vicuna and hard ground Barasingha?
Yes, try to find out what is going on with breeding their rhinos? Which females have bred now since 2022. Any births expected soon?

Whilst humming the theme to “Captain Pugwash”

Personally, I’d have more faith in Captain Birdseye

I visited Port Lypmne yesterday for the first time since 2012... The ranger truck safari was amazing, I got up close to the Giraffes, Vicuna, White Rhinos, Axis Deer, Bactrian Camel, Indian Sambar Deer, Red Lechwe and Common Eland.
Sadly I didn't see the Wildebeest or Takins (2 species I wanted to see but oh well).
I've forgotten how steep Port Lypmne is in some places... the walking route was ok, I loved seeing the Asian Water Buffalo, Bush Dogs and Malayan Tapir.

I've been told by a number of keepers about some past hoofstock which are still listed on ZTL so here goes: the park no longer houses- Greater Kudu, Defassa Waterbuck, Visayan Warty Pig, Hard Ground Barasingha, Sable Antelope and Kafue Lechwe.

Strange they still keep Sambar (non-endangered) over more endangered Barasingha. Maybe some more practical reason though.

I also forgot how many hills there were but still managed to see enough of the park, though getting around was tough and the signage isn't amazing for knowing where to go. I did the rhino experience and got to see and feed the three species which made up for all the steep climbing and no shows. It's nice to see how dense and great some of the habitats are for the animals but this makes it near impossible to see some of them sadly.

Its a very hard place to get around, possibly the hardest in the UK. Of course it was never developed with the public in mind, more to extend the area that Aspinall Snr could keep animals in. Its very difficult to see all species and tiring following the various steep paths to exhibits, some of which don't seem to connect at all. The trucks cover a good deal of it too but I found they go past some things so quickly there's little chance to see them properly, though its better than nothing. All in all a visit there can prove quite frustrating!

Yeah I found it difficult to navigate, and only managed to see the spectacled bears and other South American animals because their enclosures were on the way to the rhinos which are also semi offshow.
