Prague Zoo Praha Prague Zoo News 2022

The island looks quite sparsely planted - hopefully it grows in a bit more.

That is not an island I think, separation being made by dry moats.
I find it quite disappointing, from a visitor point of view at least. At least I like that the house two groups of gorilla and adress the challenges of the EEP.
Has anyone an idea of what will be housed in the former gorilla house ? It needs to be easily transferred in case of flooding if i understand well. Would that be the case for mangabeys or drill/mandrills ?

Hey peeps! I'll be visiting Prague in a few weeks. What are exhibits/species I should absolutely be on the lookout for?

If it was me, I’d be heading straight for the gorilla pavilion. They also have a juvenile orangutan and elephant calves, which would surely be a highlight. If reptiles are more your thing, they have a long and successful history with Komodo dragon - so it really depends on your interests and what species you’ve seen before.

These are their species numbers as of 2018:

Mammals 164
Birds 304
Reptiles 134
Amphibians 11
Fish and cartilaginous fish 32
Invertebrates 31

By the gorilla pavilion do you mean the old exhibit or the new one?

The new one doesn’t open until September I believe.

The new one. Sorry yes, I didn’t realise it wouldn’t be open until September (28/08/22). It looks phenomenal though and will allow them to manage a bachelor troop alongside the breeding troop.

Prague Zoo has taken over the new gorilla pavilion – europe-cities.com

Brazz’s vervets are the first to move into the new pavilion in May. They will be followed by northern talapoins, African aspen or water lilies – and of course gorillas, “ calculated by the director of the Prague Zoo Miroslav Bobek. “Their move should take place in June. Kiburi and Nuru will live in a space for a male group, Richard and the females and the youngest male Ajabu will live in the main part of the pavilion.

My "must sees" (in no particular order):

1. Darwin’s crater exhibit
2. Sichuan house
3. Afrika up close exhibit (Afrika zblízka in Czech)
4. Exhibits for mountain goats
5. Giant salamander house
6. Local species aviaries (located near the petting zoo)

Depends on you personal preferencies...
However, above mentioned rock exhibits are pretty unique, I guess - not only ungulate paddocks but even those big aviaries (new one for waldraps and old one with brown vultures and some smaller raptors)
I would mention two exhibits, definitely NOT must see, but often overlooked (I can imagine that many visitors do´t know they are even there which may be pity for some of them) - terrarium and water birds section
First is "hidden" behind playground in former pachyderm house, next to Darwin crater - they are decades old, nothing that special... except for Tititcaca frogs
Water bird complex is located in rear part of zoo, behind big cat house and consists from quite big, open exhibits of cranes and complex of smaller walkthrough aviaries... and shoebill exhibit (i am not sure however, if all of species are alread on-show)

Very nice list. Just want to add the Sitatunga exhibit and not to miss the Brown Hyena :)

@HOMIN96 when the Indonesian Jungle plans to open?
