The only breeding giraffe bull at the zoo, Johan, died today. He was born in December 1999 in Rhenen. Father to 29 calves. A friendly and clever boy. He kept his keepers on their tows with his ability to open any door they forgot to lock up.

RIP

Lights in night section of Indonesia pavilion stay on till 10am every day - this was implemented recently to accomodate visitors that wish to make (usable) photos of pangolins. You now have 1 hour (9am to 10am) before lights go off.

A favourite bongo antelope Maureen (14) has died recently - few days after a complicated birth of its latest calf. The zoo usually euthanizes abandoned mammal babies instead of hand-raising them, but made an exception in this case. The calf was fed by bottle with goat milk first but now it drinks only milk from two aunts (bongo females with slightly older calves of their own) and refuses the bottle.

Hi, I'm a French animal and zoo-passionate who is going to visit Czech Republic from the 10th to the 14th of September, especially for Prague and Plzen zoos and their impressive amount of rare species difficult or impossible to find in Western Europe.

After several unexpected events, I'll be finally alone on my trip so I just had the idea to leave a message here in case someone living in CR would like to join me and help me discover these zoological jewels as a guide.

I'll be staying in Prague so I'll spend more time in that zoo but a visit of Plzen is planned on the 12th.

Recently a female maned wolf arrived at the zoo . the previous female probably died .
She's a young female born in 2022 at nordens ark ( Hunnebostrand ) and is called Acai .
It seems to me that they have lost their male sumatran tiger Falco .

The director has given an update on Maureen’s calf.

The calf has been named Pipi. Unfortunately, after being spooked by some visitors, Pipi crashed into a fence. While the collision thankfully didn’t take her life, Pipi’s nose did end up affected and she lost her appetite. Pipi did regain her appetite thanks to keeper and vet efforts but right now she is underweight by 10 kgs for a bongo her age.

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to ask but...
I saw on Zoochat that, since 2019, Prague Zoo has had 2 female Cuban crocodiles (Crocodylus rhombifer)
So I just wanted to ask... Has anyone seen and photographed them? And where are they kept in the zoo?

ZTL says they are kept behind the scenes (Haltung hinter den Kulissen).
Thank you! :D
Just like the one at the Barcelona Zoo. I got some recent confirmation that he/she is still alive and well, but behind the scenes. I've read and heard Cubans are hard to handle, granted, but still...

Cuban crocodiles are kept off show currently. Their enclosure is near small mammal house (Afrika zblízka), when you take an asphalt path a little on the left behind yellow mongoose pen. Zoo offers paid "crocodile experience" for 300 CZK (12 eur) where you go meet them with a keeper and you can make photos. Zoo plans to exhibit them one day in future but it will take years.

Hm... I have heard that they want to make an Amazon (or generally neotropical) rainforest house in the future; perhaps they will eventually find their home there!

Colony of Little pied cormorants that lives in the small walk-though aviary in Australia section has a good breeding season - 15 chicks hatched so far. The colony now counts 38 heads and will be ready to let go some birds to other zoos. One old bird living in the colony hatched at Perth zoo.

The small exhibit in old gorilla house has seen change. Previous inhabitants - a pair of moustached tamarins - has been sent to zoo Jihlava. Fate of southern three-banded armadillo who lived mixed with them is unkown to me. The current animal on show is West African tree hyrax - 1,0 arrival from zoo Ostrava.

According to Zootierliste Zoo Prague has imported 5.5 Brazilian merganser from Zoopark de Itaiba in Brazil and are currently behind the scenes. This would be the first time this critically endangered species is kept in a European zoo according to ZTL.

Zoo Prague already supported Itaiba, which kept 40 of these mergansers in 2021 and was successful in breeding them.
