Prague Zoo Praha Prague Zoo News 2025

Does anyone know if Asio capensis, Cissa hypoleuca, Lophura erythrophthalma and Icterus chrysocephalus are on display?

Currently none on display, the Cissa hypoleuca are signed for the aviary outside the Sichuan pavilion but have yet to be introduced. You can see a pair in the ‘offshow’ aviaries at the back of the Szechuan walkthrough.

Visiting for the first time in a few days, does Prague hold any interesting invertebrates to look out for?
Lord Howe stick insect for one, then several interesting ones in the Africa Up Close pavilion.

I am unsure if there are others on display elsewhere... except for the American cockroach signed in the Giant Tortoise house:D.

Speaking of which, if it is at all possible could you take photos of the Lord Howe's Island Stick Insect display, as I am rather interested to see how large it is and how the replica Ball Pyramid is incorporated into it (whether the terrarium is embedded into the pyramid or if it is merely an educational feature). Unless someone else already has a photo which they could share?

At Prague Zoo, you can now meet one of the rarest insect species with a truly fascinating story Our zoo is one of only two in the world, outside of Australia, where you can observe the critically endangered Lord Howe Island stick insect, once thought to be extinct. However, it survived on an uninhabited islet called Ball’s Pyramid, located 23 kilometers from Lord Howe Island, where it originally lived ⛰️ Visit us and discover a story that could be straight out of a Hollywood movie! #ZooPraha #PragueZoo"

The video shows the layout of the exposition.

What an immense amount of educational features to devote to any species, never mind an insect. It really is wonderful to see Prague's determination to ensure that all visitors are aware of the story of this species and the significance of the continued care for them in zoos. I wonder if they will ever receive their own icon on the map, as this definitely seems like something worth drawing attention to.

I will get some pictures anyway Kalaw :)

They do have their own icon now, have a look at the most recent map.

The exhibit is great. I can confirm there are no insects on the pyramid itself, but several are viewable on exhibit (I visited on Tuesday).

I was wondering when they would update it!

Some other notable updates on the map are:
  • Africa Up Close now is signed as the head and hands of a galago rather than a tarantula like it used to be;
  • Kulans have replaced Zebras in Across The Continents;
  • Fig-parrots have replaced one of the 2 "Lories and Lorikeets" icons in the Parrot Trail;
  • The Gobi area now has icons for Przewalski's horse and Pallas' cat;
  • Kiangs have been moved to the Plains section;
  • Leopards and Bharals are now gone from Northern Forest and the deers have moved close to the Rock Outcrop;
  • Iguanas now have an icon in the Feline and Reptile Pavilion;
  • The porcupines in front of the Cheetahs are now signed.

Indeed; this area, the whole stretch from the Amur tigers past Gočár's house and up to the Himalayan tahrs, currently has no (living) exhibits due to work on Arktida. I could not find a viewing point for the (white-lipped?) deer supposedly in Rock Outcrop, unless it was behind the café by the bison.

The Chinese Goral viewing was behind the restaurant, so if I am understanding right and the White-lipped Deer now live in the former goral space, then yes, that is where it was.

I might be being stupid but I can’t see them on the map!

Same problem may be in zoo, exhibit is "hidden" behind big playground in former elephant paddock (Bororo - but I am pretty sure, there will be some signs)
