Auckland Zoo Pregnant Tiger!!!

This is great news... It'll be an excellent boost of the zoo's revenues as it'll be spring when they are ready for their enclosure...

The best thing is the last 3 matings and cubs were the result of 3 new pairings, all unrepresented. Now with adelaide and taronga's new pairings, as well as oz zoos new indo cubs, it will be brilliant for the region.

I think I'll pop in today to see if I can get some more info...

I wonder if there will be a 4th and 5th and ....cub appear at Auckland !
Lets all hold our breath .......

But this is great news , and something that will cheer up zoo staff after the death of the giraffe

@NZ Jeremy: how often do you visit Auckland Zoo, and how far away do you live from it? You always make it seem as if it's just down the road...but maybe it is!

P.S. Triple count the tiger cubs before you leave...

Ha Ha, I'm a five minute drive away, my local pub is just across the road...

I went today and it seems like three cubs is pretty close to being completely confimed... The info lady confirmed that the cubs (and mother) will be kept inside and they will be exhibited in the (old) arena, this enclosure is an original (1922) and previously kept lions for 70+ years... When I went past they had drained the water from the pools in the enclosure obviously pre-emptively, maybe keeping Melbourne in mind..?

I just have to say that I find it incredibly amusing to read reports of first 1, then 2, and now 3 sumatran tiger cubs!

Not really, that's how zoos work. You tend not to go barging into the den of a first-time mother just to see how many babies there are. You leave well alone, and wait until you have the opportunity to see the young. Sometimes it takes days until you have an accurate count.

I remember reading on the Auckland Zoo website that one cub had been born and feeling excited it had been a success yet slightly dissapointed that only one had been born!:D

I assumed before they were born it would probably be triplets as Molek's Mum Cantic had triplets both times, as did Molek's sister Malu and her niece Setia even had quads! Plus Molek was an older Mum (younger tigeress' usually are the ones to have single births).:D

I was so pleased when I heard a second cub had been born and almost immeadiately thought there could easily be a third by now, sure enough I turned on the news and there was three!:D

I guessed right there would be three cubs, soon I'll find out if my other predicition, that all three will be girls, is correct!:D

Tiger Cubs

The tiger cubs at Auckland are apparrently 2 boys and 1 girl. The web cam is interesting - they look very cute!

I can wait naming, it will be interesting on what origins they will base it on hopefully Malay or Indonesian

The Zoo is currently running a competition to name the cubs. The best names will be picked from visitor submissions. I would imagine that the names will be appropriate to the (sub)-species and will probably be Indonesian or at least similar sounding:)
