Pygmy hippos in captivity

I believe Qiuji was born by Jiao Qius (in Taipei, the first word in the name of newborns is the last word in their mom, so 嬌秋>秋吉) in 12/22/2012 since it called "Dragon baby (born in dragon year of Chinese zodiac)" by the news published by Taipei as I can remember. The calf called Qiuxiang born last year is also from Jiao Qius.
Also, Siao Jhu have a male calf Jhuchang in 12/15/2015
My bad big mistake: Jiao Qius So is really a male (according to the studbook)!!!!

The 2019 calf Qiuxiang was born 10/8/2019.

I found some information of the pygmy hippo at Buenos Aires Zoo and what happened thanks to @carloss55. Estimado Carlos reported on a photo thread that a pygmy hippo was transferred to Buin Zoo in Chile. So, now all pygmy hippo in Latino Americas are in Buin, Chile!

Buenos Aires actually held 2 pygmy hippo: a young male on B/L from Singapore and an elderly female Frida from Leipzig Zoo. It now appears that in December 2018 this elderly female was transferred to Buin Zoo in Chile.

Excellent news!

Khao Kheow Zoo - pygmy hippo births.

Their breeding pair Rabbo (40) x Jona (17) had a female calf in June 2, 2017. Female Jona's fifth.

On October 27, 2019 female Jona gave birth to another calf, a male this time. The sire was named as Tony (....).

The second source actually quote the male sire is a 21-year old animal.
Zoo visitors in Thailand given the chance to name a baby pygmy hippo

I have not been able to trace the origins of male Tony at Khao Kheow Zoo. I assume the elder breeding male Rebbo/Rabbo may have passed away and male Tony is his replacement from somewhere (edit: probably not from Thailand as per 2012/13 records).

As already mentioned in the Zoo Duisburg thread:
Pygmy hippo Quirle has been euthanized, she reached the age of 48.
She was born in Africa in 1972 and came to the zoo in 11-08-1974, she stayed the rest of her life in zoo Duisburg.
In total she had 10 daughters and 3 sons.

Pygmy hippos seem fairly popular in Indonesian zoos as our Indonesian ZC forumsters have mentioned. This in the wake of the predeliction of zoos for hippos (even more numerous here).

The collections which hold pygmy hippo are:
Taman Safari Bogor - up to 10 individuals (!!!)
Taman Safari II - Prigen/Pasaruan - a breeding pair with offspring
Bali Safari Park - a breeding pair with a calf born 2019
Bandung Zoo - a lone male
Ragunan Zoo Jakarta - a breeding pair with offspring
Sinka Island Park - a lone female
Taman Wisata Solo - a lone male
Surabaya Zoo - 6 or 7 individuals (!!!)
Yogyakarta Zoo - breeding pair with offspring

Would be nice to have an update how the population has developed since 2012!

I know Pygmy Hippos are more common than Common Hippos here in the UK, but it's not by much and even then it's hardly a common species anyway. Last I checked, Bristol, Colchester, Edinburgh, London and Marwell all have Pygmy Hippos, compared to Flamingoland, Longleat and West Midland Safari Park which have Common Hippos. Whipsnade has both.

Correct me, if I am wrong:
Bristol Zoo: 0.1
Colchester Zoo: 1.1 - breeding, unlucky with offspring twice (2017, 2018), new enclosure (due to sand impaction I assume with raising the offspring)
Edinburgh Zoo: 1.1 - new female born 2013 at Marwell
London: 1.1 - nothing recent to jump out over?
Marwell: 1.0 - female passed away in April 2019.

Did Whipsnade go out of pygmy hippo? (surprised to say the least, as a traditional for them in the past, with quite a few offspring being sent elsewhere over the years)

Heythrop used to have a pair too! What happened?

Heythrop I’m sure had a pair when I visited spring of 2019. Pretty sure Whipsnade still have them. Bristol had a pair last time I looked, over a year ago. Lovely things.

According to the most recent ZSL Animal Inventory, which lists the animals in the collection as at 1st January 2020, Whipsnade still has a male pygmy hippo.

No longer the breeding pair (female Flora was fairly old)?
Any intention of acquiring a partner for the male (Tapon?)?

A further bit of news: Since 2019 both Singapore and Taipeh Zoos have joined the EAZA/EEP for pygmy hippo. This significantly increases the number of individuals and number of founders for the Pygmy Hippo EEP.

One obstacle seems to be the sheer difficulty in exchanging individuals with Asia (and for some reason Turkey was also singled out specifically).

No just a male pygmy hippo is listed in the latest Animal Inventory.

Yes the female "Flora" was born in 1987; the male (born 2005) is a much younger animal so I hope there are plans to obtain a new mate for him.
