Rabies Jabs.

Dear Everybody. Am I cracking up? I have a memory of myself and other keepers at Chester Zoo, being given a series of 3 rabies jabs (the same timing as tetanus; which I had already had been inoculated against.). If we were ever bitten by an unfortunate rabid animal, we would still need to injected in the normal way. Afterwards, my boss believed that we were part of a trial. Since then no-one, including the Doctors in North Yorkshire, have heard of such a thing. Has anyone else experienced this and were we (ironically) used as guinea-pigs? Regards, Sue Lane.

I had to have a course of rabies vaccination to work with bats at Jersey Zoo

Rabies jabs are required and available for staff working with imported mammals, depending on species and origin. Such vaccination would not automatically eliminate the need for treating an individual incident.
Historically (and indeed currently) the UK has carefully retained its Rabies-free status, and despite a few tweaks, our importation system has proved robust and fit-for-purpose.

So essentially your boss believed in a vaccination conspiracy theory involving zoo keepers as Guinea pigs ?

I think pharmaceutical companies don't really look to Cheshire as the ideal testing ground

They tend to do that sort of thing in sub Saharan Africa where it is considerably easier to get away with.
