What's rare about Chinese Water Deer [charming as they are]?
I´ve also seen Iberian Lynx in Lisbon in 2004. I don´t remember when i saw the monk seals, but the family is still there i think, but stuffed...I've just re-read this thread from the start and somehow missed this entry first time round, now my jaw has dropped!
A species I would love to see along with the Iberian lynx that you're also far more likely to see first!![]()
Mountain Coati.
Does Central Park Zoo has Mountain Coatis!!?!?! I saw them this summer but they looked a lot like Nasua nasua to me.
should probably add that the misinformation is due to private breeders, as opposed to zoos importing them and passing them off as such (i.e. the "mountain coatis" are being kept and sold by private breeders, and a few zoos are buying them from the breeders and somehow not realising they aren't actually mountain coatis). They are indeed Nasua nasua. There's a weird thing going on in the US where a population of smallish ring-tailed coatis have been either knowingly or unknowingly dubbed "mountain coati" which causes confusion with Nasuella olivacea. I would have thought WCS would have known better though.

When did you see the Harp Seal? Any idea if it's still at Mystic??

There are no Harp Seals currently being rehabilitated by Mystic Aquarium. I believe that individual he might have been talking about might have been Pequot, the blind seal who is now at Detroit.
