Rarest animals seen in a zoo or aquarium

Fantastic news! :D
(

Not that I'm going to Porugal anytime soon though...)

If you were planning on going to Jerez, going to Portugal would be an error! :D

Great news though - that's going to be a very tempting one!

10 February is the plan, but we ll see if they ll make the deadline. Zoo-deadlines all over the world are usually quite flexible.

No need to visit Portugal if you want to go to Jerez you just have to fly to Spain.

Okay, rookie error. I wasn't sure which country was right, took a guess and failed! :p

(Not going to Spain anytime soon either...)

The only time of the year i could try to visit it would be the summer. I already had a plan to visit the Bioparc and the Oceanographic in Valencia, i guess i can put Jerez in the middle!

See my other post for details! :p

And I'm sure you could fit in another trip this year, Zoohistorica is in Bristol so think of the money you're saving there and distribute it elsewhere. ;)

Don't think I'm not tempted! :D

Never been to Jerez, or Seville. Hmmm...

You're already going to Germany, Spain isn't that far away and it is two new collections! :D
In Southern Spain you have Jerez, Seville, Bioparc Fuengirola, Selwo Aventura Estepona, Oasys Tabernas, Aquarium Zaragoza and Terra Natura Benidorm. Southern Portugal has Zoomarine and Zoo de Lagos.

I think tying into that trip is going a bit far! Jerez has certainly bumped itself up the priority list with this though.

Of all of these I've only been to ZooMarine. So many zoos, so little time!

For cat lovers there will Iberian Lynx on show soon. Jerez is planning to move some on-show from the 10th of February.

Brilliant news! I'll try to make some free time over the summer :D

I'd count Zaragoza as being in Northern Spain ;)

Some rare species i have seen in Zoos/Aquariums:

Mammals:
- Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus Monachus)
- Yucatan Brocket Deer (Mazama Pandora)
- Iberian Lynx (Lynx Pardinus)
- Long-Finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala Mela)

Where have you seen the above 4!??? Especially the Yucatan Brocket!!?

That is correct, but i was thinking in a motorway perspective.

Seal at Vasco da Gama Aquarium, Lisbon. Iberian Lynx and Whale also in Lisbon, but in the Zoo. The other was in Xcaret, Mexico.

Have you been here in Portugal?

I haven't. Was in Spain, France and Morocco but not Portugal. Would love to go at some point. I'd especially like to do whale watching in the Azores. Do you know if they still have the Mediterranean Monk Seals and Pilot Whales?

The brocket was at Xcaret!! I was there when I was 10 or so, but only remember swimming with dolphins and swimming in that cave type thing. Do you have any photos!? Any idea if they are still there??

You should really visit here, specially the two biggest zoological places in the capital.
The monk seal family is still there. Too bad it it is stuffed. The Pilot Whale was in Lisbon until 2011? She was suposed to go to Sea World but she ended up dying, as she was a rescued animal.
Azores is a great place to do whale watching, and you can see pilot whales there.
Xcarest still has the brocket, as you can see in a recent review in the Mexico forum by Carlos77.
