Reaseheath Mini Zoo Reaseheath Zoo news

From Facebook:

It is with great pleasure that we'd like to introduce you to our Otter Family.

Born 11 weeks ago; the 5 cubs arrived to first time parents Wonga and Abi; who have been doing a great job doting on them since their arrival in January.
The young take a long time to mature, and after 11 weeks- they're finally starting to come out and investigate the world, although only for short periods.

The 5 young were recently given a health check where they were all found to be in good health; and we are pleased to report that we have 4 females and 1 male.

From Facebook:

**New at the Zoo**
Yellow Mongoose Bella and Berta have recently arrived at the Zoo, and today let out into their outdoor area for the first time.
They’re sharing an enclosure with the Porcupines, and; being a relative of the Meerkat- are causing quite a stir with the neighbours!!

Quite a lot of other new stuff too incl plenty of development. Open every weekend and school hols now.

From Facebook:

Yesterday we bade a fond farewell to some long time residents at the Zoo.
Having been with us for 10 years; our Spider Monkeys have now started a new chapter at the Isle of Wight Zoo.
Sadly, some months ago we lost our male Monkey Dillon leaving Daffy and Menga alone in their enclosure.
Happily- a single male Spider Monkey at the Isle of Wight Zoo was identified as a suitable new match; and the age of 35- "Jackson" now has 2 new housemates in the shape of our 2 girls.

We wish Menga and Daffy a wonderful new life in warmer climates, and we know they'll be well taken care of and happy in their new home.

Annual Open Day today. Doesn't seem to have been a lot of change recently - still some gems here such as the Racoon Dogs (4). The reptile collection still seems extensive, but difficult to judge as much are in (closed) side rooms and the place was very busy.

Some updates on a visit today since my last visit in March:

  • The new Pygmy marmoset enclosure is now fully open with at least four individuals seen in the inside section today. I must say the size and planting is very good with only one complaint being the indoor enclosure is quite dark for photography. Their inside enclosure is just off the exotics corridor.
  • The Prevost's squirrels now have access to the former Laughing kookaburra enclosure after the latter species passed away.
  • There was no sign of the Rock eagle-owl with a sign indicating the enclosure was undergoing redevelopments. After the loss of the Red-tailed hawk last year this only leaves Northern white-faced & American barn owls and a Harris hawk as the owl & BOP species remaining.
  • A few tadpoles were seen in the Oriental fire-bellied toad tank.
  • The Peacock gudgeons have been replaced by some Bee shrimp.
  • Yellow-footed tortoises have moved into the former Argentine black & white tegu enclosure.
  • A Chaco golden knee tarantula has moved into the on-show invertebrate area on the exotics corridor.
  • The budgerigar aviary has been removed after the passing away of the remaining birds.
  • The Saanen goats have departed and have been replaced by yet more goats but of a smaller breed, likely African pygmy.
