Taronga Zoo Recent history of Taronga and developments etc

The only situation where I can see further regional facilities acquiring Pygmy Hippos, is if sufficient surplus is generated regionally. At the moment, it isn't looking like this will be the case with the current population in mind.

Common Hippos would be a far better bet - some of the smaller, regional facilities could manage to get their hands on surplus bulls/cows if breeding takes off at Werribee, and consequently Monarto/Dubbo. But I would surprised to see them being specifically bred for that - it might end up being a case of one of the main facilities needs to offload a few individuals or so, rather than want.

I guess the thing with the Common hippopotamus population is that it will be a slow expansion. It could be another year or two before Werribee have a calf on the ground, with no guarantee of a male. The first bull calves would then go to Monarto/Dubbo, with breeding introductions taking place once the bull calf is five years of age.

For Dubbo, the surplus could well be the two cows from the mother/daughter trio who don’t breed. After the breeding cow has produced a couple of calves, there could be the need to free up space. Ditto for Werribee, even with three exhibits.

Yeah that you're right, makes complete sense. Will be gradual of course, and its so great too like elephants and rhinos and others, that hippos have a really good longevity, so there it really is a decades ahead medium to long term sort of projecture of what might happen with how the individuals in Australia could be housed if at least some of these other facilities end up coming on board as holders of some of them.

Was just wondering if anyone has any further info on Taronga's Dholes?

I know they had a pair Brahmi and Tunlay who had at least two offspring - one of which being a male named Kangala. Was that pair the first and only pair Taronga had?

Any idea what happened to the Dholes in the end too. Brahmi and one of his daughters were apparently sent to another facility in the late 2000's. And did they only have just the two offspring?

I'm at work at the moment so I am doing this off memory - if I find any more details later, I will send them through.

I believe Taronga has held Dholes in the past, but Brahmi and Tunlay were the pair they held in the 2000s.

They had a daughter first, then a litter of male pups which were delivered by emergency C-section, during which Tunlay had to have a hysterectomy. Kangala was the surviving offspring from that litter. They were handreared initially but returned to the pack - I think there were five pups, two were stillborn, one died shortly after birth, then another died after a few weeks/months. This was featured in the first episode of the Australian version of The Zoo.

Brahmi and his (only) daughter were sent to another facility (as you mentioned) - I believe Singapore - and he bred again there with an unrelated female I think. Tunlay and Kangala stayed at Taronga and died in early 2015 I think.

Realistically, without future imports, the Dhole program never got going again following Tunlay's hysterectomy (although, realistically, there would have had to be future imports anyway because there was only one pair, but non-breeding animals could have been supplied to other zoos in the interim if Taronga has been able to keep breeding).

This article lists the young male's name as Jangala: Taronga moves to support Dhole conservation in Thailand. He would have been born in 2007 - I'm not sure if the second pup mentioned is his older sister (both in separate litters in the same year) or his littermate (who may have survived long enough to be announced to the public, but died relatively young).

Thanks for all the info about them Abbey, only knew a little bit about that latter dhole family (they came from Cambodia from memory hey, and 2 went to Singapore Zoo like you said, yeah was Singapore Zoo).

Before they came in 2006, the last three dholes at the zoo died 27 Nov 2002, 8 March 2001 and 20 Oct 2000. I don't know what their names were and genders - the email from zoo staff didn't mention; but those three definitely descended from the 1.1 imported from China to Taronga in 1983 (Chlidonias found that out about their origins and import year and that was a pair) and an additional individual was imported from a Canadian zoo in 1984 (ditto Chlidonias).

Staff member confirmed in email reply that was the pair from China who had offspring (guessing the one from the Canadian zoo perhaps was intended to pair with one or more of the pairs offspring, but perhaps passed away before that could happen? or simply to enlargen the pack size to a trio of course just as likely). Would be curious to find out someday if the pair from China were wild born or Chinese zoo born, or one was wild and the other zoo born.

Cool to hear they were contributing to the conservation work in Thailand for dholes.

Brahmi and Tunlay were imported from Cambodia in 2006. They did indeed bred twice, producing a female pup in 2006 and the litter containing Kangala in 2007.

Brahmi and his daughter were exported to Singapore in 2009; and Tunlay and Jangala remained at Taronga until their deaths in 2015.

Prior to this, three Dhole were imported from China in the 1980’s. The last descendants from these imports died in 2002.

Theres a really good comprehensive bunch of old and recent satellite imagery across NSW (like with the Landgate site for WA mentioned on PZ thread) where for example with Taronga Zoo can see old satellite imagery of the zoo like how one can view and explore simiarly on G.E from different decades across the mid 20th century right up until the 2000s and recent ones too (ArcGIS Web Application is the link, and can enter the place interested in seeing e.g Taronga Zoo). Would be countless historical satellite imagery for other places in NSW too, but in terms of Taronga, there are some really interesting to see ones).

Interesting, I wasn't aware of any surviving offspring from Billy and Lindy following 0.1 Louise who was born in 1982 and seemingly passed young.

This male must've been another son of Billy's and Lindy's, although there's ultimately no record of an unknown male later on at any other facilities. Is there any info on where the male was transferred to? I'm assuming Dubbo, where he probably passed away quite young too.

It amazes me that the sex of the flock of 11 flamingos went unknown for such a long period of time. Like the Greater flamingo, there’s sufficient sexual dimorphism to differentiate the sexes (it’s blindingly obvious in Auckland’s flock, with the leg bands allowing me to confirm against individuals in the flock).

What a shame the flock was reduced to just females. Adelaide eventually had just a female (Chilean) themselves but considering both had larger flocks historically, I can only wonder how things might have turned out had the initiative been taken to merge them at one of the open range zoos.

Taronga Annual Report Jun 1987 - June 1988.pdf

Taronga (Sydney) Species Inventory June 1987 - June 1988.pdf

Thanks for sharing the 1987/1988 annual report, it was fascinating to read through.

Some of the many highlight of 1987/1988:

- Birth of the Jaguar cub Maya
- Birth of orangutan Jantan
- Birth of chimpanzee Shona
- Birth of North American Harbour seal Chelan
- Successful birth/rearing of three male Cheetah cubs
- Birth of Echidna
- Acquisition of Elephant seals and Australian sea lions
- Extension of Taronga’s elephant exhibit to 5x size
- New African elephant bull barn at Dubbo
- Giant panda visit (June-October 1988)

It’s interesting to see a (then) staggering $1.4 million allocated to the construction of a reptile complex (which opened as Serpentaria in 1995); with planning for the orangutan complex (which opened as Orangutan Rainforest in 1994). Other future projects included Maned wolf exhibit and Asiatic lion exhibit at Dubbo.

Taronga Annual Report Jun 1987 - June 1988.pdf

Taronga (Sydney) Species Inventory June 1987 - June 1988.pdf

It’s interesting to note that by June 1988 Snowy (1983) the chimpanzee (then five years old) had been introduced to an ‘elderly’ female and seven young chimpanzees.

The eldest chimpanzee in the community was Fifi (1947), then aged 41 years; but the female this report referred to was Bessie (1950), who was noted in other sources to have been the first of the adults to accept Snowy. At 38 years, Bessie definitely would not have been considered elderly by today’s standards; with two females in the region recently producing offspring in their early 40’s; and females of this species having a captive lifespan of 50-60 years (Bessie reached 61 years).

Shiba (1981) was the first chimpanzee in the community to accept Snowy, so would have been one of the seven young chimpanzees referred in the report. The other six would likely have been Melissa (1978), Lisa (1979), Sacha (1980), Ficha (1981), Cara (1981) and Samantha (1983).

In another article, it was mentioned the export to Hyderabad was noted to have provided an opportunity to export chimpanzees Snowy had failed to integrate with. Danny (1974) and Mervin (1982) were named specifically. Apparently both were able to be introduced to Snowy individually; but when introduced together, they attacked him. Sutu (1974), who went with them to Hyderabad (along with her infant Sumu) was an ambitious young female. It wouldn’t surprise me if she had been unable to have been introduced to Snowy at that point; with Cheena (1985) likely taking the place of another problematic female who was able to be introduced during the timeframe of the export being arranged. The original plan was to send an additional four (along with Danny/Mervin), so my money would have been on Sutu/Sumu (with Sumu being a dependent infant) and Lulu/Lewis.

Thanks for sharing, @steveroberts. Lots of interesting information here.

The three Common chimpanzee sent to Jackson Zoo left on October 16, 1986. They were:

1.0 Jojo (18/09/1964) Bobby x Fifi
0.1 Belle (18/09/1975) Bobby x Chiki
1.0 Bartholomew (09/05/1986) Jojo x Belle

It was interesting to see a clear photo of Belle on Page 15. The family resemblance to her niece (Cara) at Wellington Zoo is very strong.

It was impressive to see Taronga’s dedication to introducing new genetics into their chimpanzee colony by making the decision to retire the then 22 year old alpha male Jojo, who was related to many of females in the community. His export was obviously a necessity to facilitate the introduction of Snowy, but the removal of Danny, Mervin (and possibly Sutu, who went with them to Hyderabad) was later required.

The Sumatran tigers exported to San Diego Zoo were:

0.1 Sinta (02/12/1983) Nico x Meta
0.1 Usha (12/03/1985) Nico x Meta

Their sister Kali followed in late 1987, with her descendants returning to the region via the import of Ramah and Zayana by Auckland Zoo in 2022.

According to Zootierliste, Japanese giant salamander were kept at Taronga Zoo until around 1985, but is this true? Has anyone actually seen it?
ZootierlisteHomepage
A pair were imported from Japan in either 1983 or 1984.

@steveroberts saw them on site in 1995 and noted they were gone by 2002 (with them dying in between those years).
Japanese giant salamander are thought to be a gift in gratitude when koala were given to Japanese zoos. At the time, it was probably the only giant salamander kept in captivity in Oceania.

Yeah two arrived at Taronga in 1985 from Japan, they were wild caught in 1971 (ages and genders got lost in the transitions between places, or more likely not known; ages would of only ever of likely been an estimate at time of being taken from the wild of course), one of them died in 1997 and the other one died in 2002 (the friendly reptile keeper who's email reply confirmed the dates mentioned, said wasn't personally sure what their causes of death were: but it appeared were both simply age-related natural causes based on their advanced ages).
