Rosamond Gifford Zoo Rosamond Gifford Zoo

The zoo has Turkmenian Markor not Mouflon, they no longer have the bats (at least not on exhibit) and they do have Guanaco but they may be hard to see. They tend to live behind the Bactrian Camels. We saw them last time but they were very far away. Overall 2 hours is plenty of time to see everything, the only thing still closed is the USS Antiquities area. Make sure to see the new Leopard exhibit and they have a Kiwi exhibit, but he is hard to see. Other top exhibits are of course the Elephant Preserve and Penguin Coast.
Thank You! It's a shame those species are no longer there, but the zoo will still be worth the visit. I'm especially excited to see the white-lipped deer!

Here is an interesting review of the zoo (complete with many photos) from Felis Consulting, which is the company of zoo designer Stacey Ludlum.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo: Developing the BIG Identity — Felis Consulting

Interesting read. I agree with her opinion of the inside of the entry building, it felt strange and I couldn't put my finger on why; she nailed it. There's now a small fish tank when you walk in so you do technically see animals right away, but it's a tank that could also be in any library or office. They've been redoing the aquarium and herp exhibits, so those were closed on my visit late last year, along with the restaurant. The new jaguar exhibit was the only one completed, I think, and it was pretty nice.

I disagree with her choice of the word "schizophrenic", but had she chosen a non-ableist word like chaotic, I'd agree. I assume they can't get money to do entire areas so only upgrade one exhibit at a time, but that doesn't excuse the lack of flow. The only exhibits that seem to go together are the markhor and takin ones, which are both just chain link. Everything else varies wildly and given the curves in the path and spaces between some areas (which unlike the author, I have no problem with and definitely wouldn't consider "long"), you have no clue what you're going to come up to next, in a bad way. Even the indoor space that was open lacked any sort of cohesiveness. The general theme seemed to be jungle, but there's meerkats, african porcupines, north american porcupines... it would make more sense to theme it as a primate area with a few extras, like Omaha's gorilla space.

It's a zoo I really want to love, and it has a great species list for a place of its size, but it couldn't quite pull it together. Hopefully a decade or so from now, that's no longer the case!

Do you mean the amur Leopard habitat? I don't remember them having a Jaguar when I was there last summer.

I also agree with much of the review. From my visit, I found the outdoor areas to be very good (though not perfect), and found the indoor areas to be both lacking in quality and overall confusing to navigate.

Yes, sorry, leopard! The article said jaguar so my brain typed jaguar :)
