Sad news :(

Surprised to hear they were trying to breed from a 15 year old tigress however. In Australasia, they don't breed with females past their 12th year.

Is there a lack of available females in the American Sumatran tiger programme? There is a large surplus of females in Australasia.

There is an pretty even split of breeding age female Sumatrans... actually a few more females than males. Most of the time females have trouble breeding after they turn 12 but their genetics must have been important to roll the dice and hope for cubs from an older female.

I think Kerinci (National Zoo) was around 13/14 years old when she had her last litter in 1999. She was extremely valuable though as she was wild born.

It's a shame more of Australasia's Sumatrans aren't sent to the USA as we have an enormous cohort born between 2006-2011. 17 have yet to be paired with mates, and more than half probably won't ever be bred from.
