Salisbury Zoo Salisbury zoo news

Maybe now people will actually get to see the species there :D I've been going for decades and never seen one there.
That’s too bad you never see them - when they are visible (as red wolves as many zoos seldom are) it’s one of the most attractive red wolf exhibits I’ve seen

On March 21st, the zoo announced that their (0.1) white-nosed coati named Daisy passed away on March 8th at age 14 due to a sudden decline in health caused by intervertebral disc disease. Her former exhibit will be upgraded and renovated for future residents.

The zoo is currently going through a rebranding, with new logo, maps, and slogan. The slogan is "A World of Wild on the Eastern Shore". The press release seems to be a bit ahead of the zoo's website, as it doesn't yet have the new logo on it :D

The interactive map feels a little unnecessary for such a small place. The herp building isn't labeled at all. Map | Salisbury Maryland Zoo FREE Admission Park

I wish they'd put this much into upgrading the actual zoo...

The last 10 years saw the new vet hospital, Australia, and the herp house, a fair amount of change for a very small, city-run zoo in a not-especially economically prosperous part of the region.

That being said, I’ve heard plans being formulated there, so let’s see what ends up happening

The hospital was required and took them much longer than it should have. Australia is small and doesn't match the rest of the place (though the aviaries are nice!). No comment on the herp house ;)

I'd really like to see the place improve. They need to keep the gift shop open longer, for one, to help bring in some money. I've seen it open once, and never seen the eatery open.

Considering both what it replaced and the relatively small budget, I think the Morgan Center is nothing to sneeze at. The hospital was a major hassle, as city building projects tend to be (from the perspective of one who has spent a lot of time dealing with city zoos). I actually have been to both the gift shop and snack bar there on a few occasions - Salisbury has a challenge not uncommon among city zoos in which it is has several support organizations - educations and visitor services are run by a separate support org, due to the city not financing those functions (similar to how National had FONZ).

I have a soft spot for plucky little zoos, Salisbury among them. I’ve seen several master plans of it throughout the years, most of which never really took off due to lack of support from the city (and, to be fair, some were probably over ambitious for what the town could support). Still, with a little more support and resources, I’ve always felt that place could really shine.

It has a weird design, the glare is awful (why the heck are the exhibits on the outside? Is that not harder to heat, too?), and the anaconda exhibit looks too small. I get the vet hospital being a hassle, but they were getting told off my AZA for years about the lack of vet care at the place. Other city zoos don't have problems or delays like Salisbury has had. If it's problems with the city, they need to step up and figure out what they need to do to fix those problems. Having a poor zoo that loses AZA - which the city requires them to maintain - looks awful for the city.

I have a soft spot for them too, but as someone with no connections to the place other than where I live, they don't come across as "plucky".

Exhibits are on the outside because there was deemed insufficient room on the inside for exhibits, keeper space, and visitor pathways (they were keeping to the original footprint of the old building). I wouldn’t call the anaconda exhibit too small by any means for a yellow (I’ve also seen it from the inside, perhaps it looks smaller outside).

AZA accreditation loss was unfortunate, though to be honest to this day I’m sometimes surprised by what facilities keep and lose accreditation- there are definitely other places that I feel like have far more to answer for to the accreditation board that still manage to coast by.

I’ve visited many times over the years and know some former staff fairly well, so that colors my view of the place. I admit that colors my views of the place, but I’ve always been very fond of it

On April 30th, the zoo announced they acquired (0.0.2) Nigerian dwarf goats named Bert Hopper and Ernie Henry from Ard Brac Acres in Maryland which are now on exhibit in the white-tailed deer exhibit.

On June 5th, the zoo announced they transferred (0.0.2) Indian peafowl to a new unspecified facility.

On June 9th, the zoo announced they built a new pathway that has better viewing angles for their black-tufted marmosets, cotton-top tamarin, ocelot, and ducks (American black, Barrow's goldeneye, hooded merganser, ring-necked, spotted whistling, wood).

An interview with the zoo's new director (former curator) about planned changes for the zoo. Most of it is kind of a puff-piece, light on details, but he does mention a few more specific details about the upcoming eagle exhibit (specifically its size, five times larger than the old exhibit) and confirmation that the zoo is planning a new Andean bear habitat, for which they are seeking to raise $5 Million. The later is a project which has been talked about for decades, so hopefully it's finally coming
