San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Safari Park News 2021

The zoo redesigned their app that once had bought the Zoo and Safari Park maps as well as info in one app. Now have been split into two separate apps, one for the Zoo and for the Safari Park, in the Apple App Store from what I saw.

I noticed on The Zoo San Diego season 2 in the episode Hog Wild that the the parks Red River Hogs that where in the enclosure near the Somali Wild Asses in the mammal marsh habitat were moved out of that exhibit and the parks Soemmerring’s Gazelles were moved into the former habitat once occupied by the Red River Hogs. Was this species of gazelle on public display before this move at the park?

They are on exhibit at the zoo with the Giraffes in Urban Jungle. They are also on one of the painted signs in the Africa Tram area at the Safari Park and can be seen on the actual ride.

I didn't recall the red river hogs now living with the okapi and possibly duikers, what's the problem of red river hogs living in African rainforest mixed-species exhibits?
(exception in Disney's Animal Kingdom lodge where the okapi lives among other animals along with red river hogs).

Some recent changes from my recent visit, for those interested in visiting soon:

Chacoan Pecarry group present in Nairobi Village. May have been sent over from the Zoo since the group at te Zoo appears smaller than usual.

Construction and signage had gone up already for Butterfly Jungle, should be accessible as of this past Saturday.

Rotation of Striped Hyenas and Lions at Lion Camp isn’t on a set schedule after directly contacting the Safari Park. Was told that you can sometimes see the hyenas early in the mornings at Lion Camp.

Small exhibit outside of Wings of the World aviary that previously housed the Southern Pudu now houses more birds including Storm’s Stork and Red Breasted Goose.

Dual pair of Rhino mom and calf present in East Africa field exhibit.

A couple of Addra Gazelle fawn in Nursery in Nairobi Village.

In the zoo thread you mentioned there were Angolan Colobus on display, was this the same individuals that’s were in the cages near the bear grottos or were they from the island at the safari park that were replaced with hornbills or were they the existing ones that moved in after the gibbons left.

I am unsure if they are but the hornbills were definitely taking up the island in the Safari Park, although I thought the ones in the Safari Park appeared to be Kikuyu Colobus Monkeys based on my last photos I have prior to their departure.

Having visited Butterfly Jungle for the first time ever and it being a paid experience as well, I’ll give some insight to anyone who is thinking about going soon.

1. it’s a flat rate of 60 dollars for a small group, a couple, or individual. Add ons such as nectar and fun family photo op are available at check in.

2. It’s about 30 minutes total, not the longest time to explore the 2 dozen species of butterflies.

3. There are some bird species present in the same section, for example just noticed what looked like speckled mousebirds and an African Pygmy goose.

4. 5 sections total, can only spend a few minutes at each section due to flow into indoor setting. Staff are good about reminding you when to move.

5. no signage for butterfly species is displayed however a few staff members have a photo index of butterflies and was able to ask when I spotted one and photographed it.

If you really love butterflies, this a must stop at the Safari Park. If you also want a somewhat intimate activity with your family, significant other, or even yourself, you should do it. But 60 dollars is a lot for a short event and seems to be a better investment for a smaller group to distribute the cost. It will be around until May 9th.

Just received an email regarding their “going back to normal” phase. As of June 15th, no health screens or masks will be required but recommended for those who aren't vaccinated The Africa Tram tour will begin again and individual rates for special experiences will also be reinstated, no group rates needed for tours.
