San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2012

Well this has gone severely off topic, and for that I apologize.

In San Diego news I received this month's Zoonooz magazine and it has an article about the Outback exhibit. Oddly it talks about all sorts of Australian animals without really giving too many specifics about which species it will actually contain. Should be interesting as more information develops. I would not be shocked to see some interesting imports make their way into this complex.

My apologies, too, for helping it get off-topic.

I read the article in ZooNooz, too, about the new Outback exhibit. I will be going in February, but it won't be open yet. I'm looking forward to seeing, though, what types of animals, other than the Koalas, will be there.

Didn't someone post that Australia was hoping to start sending Tasmanian Devils to US zoos again? That would be a nice addition.

I think that this is on topic as it concerns what is in the San Diego ZooNOOZ. I had the exact same reaction that you did to those pictures. Do you think they are telegraphing that some of these species are going to be coming to the zoo? I wasn't sure how else to interpret that calendar, although perhaps it is as simple as "here are some pictures of cool Australian animals".

I think the latter is the case. By the way, look at the "Parma Wallaby" again and tell me if you think anything is off ;)

I wouldn't be surprised to have something like quolls show up though.

I'm glad to see it's only a fund-raising thing to build them a new home and not because they want/need to get rid of them, which was my initial concern upon seeing the title. I'm a bit confused, though. The article states:

Seven species of lemurs, including four that have never been exhibited here before: the blue-eyed black lemur, mouse lemur, aye-aye, and collared lemur.

Does that mean that the other 3 currently are being exhibited or does it mean they've been exhibited in the past? I know I've seen a couple of Ring-taileds before, but that's it. What are the other 2 that SDZ has had?

It'll be "fun" to have a "Mort" and a "Maurice" in San Diego to go along with "King Julian" (hehehe. I'm an adult who likes Penguins of Madagascar cartoon. Sue me! <wink> )

Based on the images on that website, my guess would be the other three are ring-tailed, red ruffed, and Coquerel's sifaka.

That's possible. But the article thing said that 4 are never-before-exhibited. I know they have (or used to have) Ring-tailed, but I've never seen the Red Ruffed or Sifaka. If the zoo still has those last two, where are they? Ring-taileds are my favorite but I like seeing different subspecies. I've also seen Red Ruffed, Blue-eyed Black and...that might be it. I was hoping to see Black and White when I visited Santa Barbara Zoo a couple of years ago, but was a few weeks too late...they'd moved them to another zoo.

If you read it carefully, it says that the four are blue-eyed black, mouse, aye-aye, and collared.

Yes, I know. I actually quoted those 4 in my previous thread. That wasn't what I was asking. I give up. YOU need to read carefully.

I see that in your earlier post, but the last one was worded a bit strange. You don't need to be hostile.

To answer your question, they exhibited sifakas in the 60's, and red ruffed were exhibited within the last decade on elephant mesa.

There were red-ruffed and I think black and white ruffed at San Diego in the old monkey quadrangle that got replaced by the current monkey forest exhibits. I don't think that there have been lemurs on display since that time, although quite possibly they have been off-display in the back of the zoo where they have a large primate breeding/holding complex.

There have been ring-tailed and red ruffed at different times in the former "bat cage" on Elephant Mesa within the last couple years

This is so funny! I was just thinking about why the San diego zoo had a great primate collection with no lemurs. I guess this answers my question. It's interesting that aye ayes are becoming more common in zoos. I remember a couple of years ago there were only 1 or 2 zoos with aye ayes!

It's great that the zoo will presumably finally have a good fossa exhibit. Adding the lemurs is cool too. The garden should be nice too. I wonder if they're just going to move the Madagascar plants from EO over there.

Bout time they did some more Madagascar stuff. Hopefully they'll really be able to grow some cool plants in the exhibit. I don't think they will be moving the Madagascar garden from EO as they could not move them in the first place because they were fragile. Although, the new exhibit location seems questionable. It sounds like the new exhibit will kind of be off the beaten path or where the new Africa Rocks is supposed to be (or maybe they scratched the Africa Rocks idea?) "Up the hill from Hunte Amphitheater" sounds like up the canyon? Or maybe it will be on the that trail that goes down to the warthogs and connects with the back end of the amphitheater?
