San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2014

I think the reference is to the previous incident. Theres nothing on the web about a second killing at the zoo and we know how the news is. They would be all over it.

Old news. Connor the male is the only tiger currently at the zoo.

The coconut crab has been moved into the insect house so that it can start its molting process and needs to bury him self. They hope to bring him back to his exhibit by the pigmy hippos in a month and remodel the exhibit to fit him better.

A baby hippo was born at the zoo today. Fumani, Otis, and new baby are on exhibit together. I don't know the sex yet. I will try to get to the zoo tomorrow to get pictures.

I was wondering when the baby hippo was due. I knew it had to be sometime soon.

I just heard the baby hippo died. That all I know right now.

Jama, the old Chinese leopard has been taken off exhibit. He had his physical and while his blood work was good, it was discovered that he had cataracts. A Turkmenistan caracal in now in the exhibit.

It's funny how an exhibit can go from mediocre to great with just a change of residence.

I think more zoos do the work with the small mammals but you just don't hear about it. They aren't as flashy or as popular as the big guys. My own zoo, Toronto, does fantastic work with Black Footed Ferrets and Vancouver Island Marmots but they rarely put out press releases about their work so it goes unnoticed and celebrated. But everyone hears about the birth of lions, tigers, apes, ect.

Speaking of the big babies. Heres an update on orang infant Aisha.

Jama, the Chinese leopard, was euthanized after his latest blood showed some problems.
The baby hippo that died was a boy and weighed 83 pounds. Nothing official but it seems that Fumani, the mom, may have stepped on him while chasing Otis the male.
Two crested screamer eggs hatched on Friday. I was lucky enough to get some pictures of the first one hatching.
The crowned eagle was sitting on 1 egg today.
