San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2014

In the Netherlands it's not illegal to keep cobras but what can happen has been shown last week. A Cape cobra escaped from a privat collection in the middle of a village ( Made ).
With several schools in the direct neighbourhood it was big news overhere ! Luckily the snake was discovered a day later in the barn nextdoor ! The keeper now has given this - and his other 16 venomous snakes - away.

The article is confusing. Bai Yun is female but they keep referring to her as him. I cant remember how old Gao Gao is but is it possibly they have the two bears confused? Gao Gao has had a lot of dental issues in recent years due to his age. So he would make sense. But Bai Yun is getting up there too and she could easily be developing teeth problems. If thats the case then they have the gender wrong.

Never mind I found other articles. It was Bai Yun.

Sorry about that TZFan and thankyou for pointing that out to me. I wrote the article without noticing that the press release does not state what gender she was. I have now corrected the mistakes.

Here are few things I noticed wandering around the zoo the other day. The pangolin is now on exhbit in the Children's Zoo. He is in the glass enclosure directly across from the playground. They are still doing the keeper talk at 1:30. There is a new tamandua in the last exhibit across from
the petting zoo. There is an aye-aye down on Center Street. I actually got to see him awake but couldn't get a good picture. They have removed the anoas and the visayan warty pigs from their exhibits to start building the snow leopard and amur leopard exhibits.

I hate these new names, where is Center Street? It's so generic sounding that I can't associate it with anything tangible.

that's cool. Is this permanent now? Has the pangolin ever been on proper display before (apart for the demonstrations)?

Funny that you say that, I had to look it up on the map to see what they named it. The aye aye is in those old cages in between the bears, where the 2 capuchins used to be. Does that help?

They're putting the new leopard exhibits there? I thought they were initially planning on building them by Panda Trek

This is the first time that the pangolin is on display outside of the talks. They have a climate-controlled house for him and now from what Betsy reports they have a public exhibit for him now too.

They are going to be next to Panda Trek. When you walk down hippo trail you come to the intersection of Hippo Trail and Park Way. Panda Trek is to your right, the new exhibits will be to your left.

Pangolin exhibit. The pangolin is inside the tree in the exhibit.

Great news about the pangolin!

Did the anoas or visayan warty pigs get moved to another part of the zoo?

Also what was the aye-aye exhibit like? And where exactly on Center Street was it??

Isn't that the former tamarin exhibit inside the children's zoo entrance?

Yes it is, I think they were refurbishing it the last time I was there in August. The aye-aye has been there since August too.

Good news on the construction of the leopard exhibits. Its too bad the Visayan Warty Pigs and Lowland Anoa are gone though. I hope the zoo is able to build new exhibits for them. It would be a shame to see those go off-exhibit permanently. I am hoping the leopard exhibits are a big improvement and not just version 2 of the mountain lion exhibit.

Also, aren't there two pangolins in the collection? These are Chinese Tree Pangolins right?

Incorrect - you are conflating the name of two taxa.

Chinese Pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) is the one held over at Leipzig here in Europe. The taxon at San Diego is Tree Pangolin (Manis tricuspis). I believe two individuals were indeed held until relatively recently, but I have a feeling one has since died.

The anoas and visayan warty pigs on off exhibit. I am not sure they are coming back.

I posted a picture of the aye-aye exhibit in the gallery. I think it is a horrible exhibit for many reasons. There are 4 cages like this in between the sun bear and grizzly bear exhibits. There is Schmidt's red tailed monkey and Debrazza guenon in the first one on the left. The aye-aye is in the one in the back on the left hand side. In the first one on the right there is ring-tailed lemur and red-collared lemurs. Kikuyu colobus are in the back on the right. I am assuming the lemurs will moving to new exhibits when the Madagascar area opens in a couple of years. I am not sure if this area of the zoo will get a facelift any time soon.
