"Hello, everyone. I've been asked to share this statement with the group regarding the Zoo's Asian elephant, Ranchipur:

On Tuesday, August 23, 2016, animal care staff made the difficult decision to euthanize Ranchipur, an elderly Asian elephant who had been under veterinary care for several years for a variety of geriatric ailments. Today, staff members noticed Ranchipur experiencing medical difficulties, suddenly looking weak, and leaning on a utilitree for support. Despite emergency medical assistance, he was not responsive; and in the interest of reducing his suffering, staff members made the difficult decision to euthanize him.

Part of the Elephant Odyssey habitat will remain closed to guests for the rest of the day. For security reasons Ranchipur's tusks will be removed, inventoried, and safely secured, until they can be properly disposed of.

Ranchipur celebrated his 50th birthday earlier this year and was the lone male in the Zoo’s elephant herd—made up of older, non-breeding elephants, including two Asian elephant females and three African elephant females. He lived at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park from 1981 to 2009, and moved to the San Diego Zoo in April 2009 when the 7.5-acre Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey multispecies habitat was built. He was easy to spot, with huge tusks approximately 6 to 6.5 feet long that weighed an estimated 100 pounds each. As a well-known member of the herd, he will be missed by staff, volunteers, and guests. Please take a moment to share your condolences with those people who worked closely with Ranchipur, who especially will be feeling his loss."

I so sad he was one of my favrite animals at the zoo I hope the zoo will get a new bull soon but I'm still very sad. also I thought the zoo had 3 Asian females devi mary and smithi ?

I doubt that the zoo will get another bull unless there is one who needs a retirement home. Unfortunately, Sumithi was euthanised in April of this year. So this leaves the zoo with just 5 females. 2 Asians, Devi and Mary and 3 Africans, Tembo, Shaba, and Mila.

not sumithi too man now I'm worried mary is next:( I predict Bronx zoos elephants will come here soon.
 
I doubt that the San Diego Zoo is going to actively search for new elephants. They currently have 5 females, which can all go in one yard without a fuss if need be. The total area accessible for elephants is 2.5 acres as far as I know, which is fine for retiring animals. However, to have all five in just one of the yards would be a bit cramped. I think that the most likely situation would be if another zoo approached SDZ about sending that zoo's elephants to SDZ. However, there's no reason for SDZ to look for more.

I agree, Bronx would be a bit of a long ride. Depending on the age of the individuals, that may not be such a great idea, although perhaps a special plane would be fast enough to reduce stress.
 
maybe also when Lucky passes At San Antonio zoo Nicole will come here to I'm aware the zoo doesn't look for elephants but takes in elephants that need a retirement home from other zoos and circuses where they are abused this most likely means san diego might never phase out elephants

Actualy I belive its just over 3 acres. I agree its a long trip for Bronx and the tennese sanctuary is closer but in san diego they can escape the winter permenitly

This is a quote from the San Diego Zoo's blog about Mila.

"Mila’s story happens to be quite interesting. She traveled all the way from New Zealand, where she lived for more than 30 years. For the last four years, Mila lived at the Franklin Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary just south of Auckland, where a team of dedicated keepers and supporters worked hard to find her a new home. Unfortunately, it was never an option to keep Mila in New Zealand as there happens to be only one other elephant in the entire country, and the two of them had never met. It was the goal of the Franklin Zoo Charitable Trust to send her to a home that could provide Mila the opportunity to be social with other elephants. The San Diego Zoo happened to be the best option for Mila to live out the rest of her life. After a year of planning and preparations, Mila traveled inside a custom-made 15,000-pound (6,800 kilograms) steel crate by cargo plane more than 6,500 miles (10,400 kilometers) from Auckland to Los Angeles. She was then transported in a flatbed semi-truck with a police escort to the San Diego Zoo, where she unloaded into our Care Center with ease. More than 20 people, including Franklin Zoo and San Diego Zoo staff, accompanied Mila on her monumental journey half-way across the world."
 
A trio of dwarf mongoose (is it mongooses or mongeese? I expect it's the former) were born about three weeks ago.
