San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo news 2016

Baba, the African White Bellied Tree Pangolin, passed away last night. Baba came to the zoo in 2007.

I was lucky enough to spend a few special moments watching him last year. He has educated millions of zoo visitors about pangolins, and we can only hope that he had an impact. He will be missed :(

Very sad news. I was able to see him this spring fortunately. A really nice creature with an unusual diet for pangolins.

I'm sorry to hear that. The Pangolin presentation was the highlight of my visit to San Diego. I feel lucky to have experienced it.

The area from the capybaras to the tarpits exhibit in EO is now closed due to construction. The lions have been moved to the Safari Park and will be on rotation with the park's lions. The jaguars have been moved to the hospital. The young one, Valerio, will most likely be transferred to another zoo soon. Construction is supposed to take a month. We shall see.

What is the zoo's lion collection? 1.1?
What enhancements, if any, will be made to the lion exhibit for the new Africa rocks exhibit?

Yes, the lion collection is 1.1, M'bari and Etosha. While the move is to facilitate construction for Africa Rocks, I have heard rumors that they will be doing something to the lion/jaguar exhibit. I don't expect major renovations.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... looks like Its all up to the Brookfield zoo now to save pangolins.

Sorry, but no. Brookfield Zoo was not the only to receive pangolins, another relatively well-known AZA zoo received a decent amount as well. However, that zoo has made no announcements whatsoever regarding this, so, lips are shut. In addition, there is the Pangolin Conservation organization in St. Augustine. If it isn't the source for all these new arrivals, it at least probably helped with the imports. The organization has kept at least five pangolins recently, but as a strangely secretive organization, there haven't been any updates or even a final census of animals they've had. Their animals are usually imported from Togo, and it is likely that is where at least some of the recent pangolins came from. In addition, this organization boasted the first captive birth of a white-bellied tree pangolin (not sure if this is a global record or just for the US). That being said, it is likely that any pregnant individuals at the Brookfield Zoo and the other zoo have given birth since their arrival. Time will tell if this was a successful conservation measure.

Thanks for the info. I hope san diego will recive more one day. The zoo has really had some notable animal deaths this year. Ranchipour and Sumithi Passed away as well. And while where on the topic of Brookfield Cookie the cockatoo (the oldest cockatoo in the world) Passed away as well at 83, sad

Agreed, and Janey the orangutan, a favorite of the locals, also passed away unfortunately. Hopefully things will turn around with African Rocks.

Are the lions getting a new exhibit in the rocks ? If so is that why the oyddesy Is under construction? If they arnt will lions jaguars and the South American animals stay at the zoo?

I don't think they are. As they stand, the lion and jaguar exhibits are a little small and sparse (similar to most of EO). None of the animals are leaving (as far as we know), hopefully the improvements will make that section of EO better for the animals.
