San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2021

A female Swamp Monkey was born on Christmas last year.

From the zoos website:
Zuri the Allen’s swamp monkey received a special Christmas present. On December 25, six-year-old Zuri gave birth to her second infant, a female. Zuri is also the dam (mother) of Kamili, a 1.5-year-old female who is now a big sister.

A Golden Takin was born on April 14 to mom Bona and dad Zhao. I’m told that this is the first Golden Takin born in the Western Hemisphere! I’ll post a photo of mom with baby at one day old. View attachment 482283
Do you know when the zoo acquired Golden Takin because I don't believe they were there pre 2018 and this is the first I'm hearing of them at the zoo. I do know they also hold Sichuan and used to hold Mishmi a few years ago so when were the Golden Takin introduced?

The three adult Golden Takin came from Berlin Tierpark and were first on exhibit in January of 2020. If you search the San Diego Zoo News 2020 Thread you will see more information about it. I believe that both Sichuan and Mishmi Takins are still also held, but they are not on exhibit.

Two new elephants have joined the herd at Elephant Odyssey: one being Nipho from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Sundzu from Reid Park Zoo :) Posted on their Twitter page moments ago. Appearing to form the bachelor herd from what their social media posts say!

Well whaddya know! I guess this would have made sense in the long term for SDZ to have a bachelor group of elephants while SDZSP had a breeding group. That said, does this mean the end of Asian elephants at the zoo when Mary and Devi pass on?

I don’t know but since Elephant Odyssey was created in mind for senior/geriatric elephants, it could accommodate both species if other zoos were wanting to send their elephants off to San Diego. It’s not meant to have a breeding population there at the zoo from just the design of EO and the Safari Park having breeding success with African Savanna Elephants, further exemplified by the renovations for Elephant Valley to take place in the next few years as their next capital campaign.

The San Diego Zoo is building new habitats for their Hummingbirds and their Komodo Dragons

3 species of hummingbird is nice, hopefully a tropical species or two. 14 species of South American bird is nice, I'm guessing these will be small species like the Purple Honeycreeper, Golden-collared Manakin, and tanagers like the previous hummer house. 14 is a major uptick from the old one though. :)

I was just wondering when these would be done. Komodo dragons look good, even with that off putting mural back drop. Hummingbird aviary looks super neat, despite visiting the zoo multiple times in the past I never had the time to see the old one, honestly I never even found where it was. The whole open air indoor concept is honestly really cool. I love to see new tech integrated into zoo exhibits.

If I'm lucky, I may get the chance for another San Diego visit at the end of the year. Fingers crossed!

Why is SDZ stamp collecting takin ssp. while losing so many endangered antelope and caprine hoofstock species? What is the sense in that?
