San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo news 2022

I’ll be going next Monday and Tuesday to do a photo shoot the whole complex, I should be getting a new lens before then to try out there :) I don’t know if you’re going back anytime soon but I can’t wait to see it in person just from the awesome photos you posted!
I am at the zoo most days because that is a safe and fun place to get my exercise done. I felt very rushed photographing there on Sunday. We only had a couple of hours and I was with family that were not into the zoo as I am. I can't wait to see your photos and your thoughts about the area as well. Let me know if you want to meet up to say hi.

That’s a great idea! I will be there on Monday around 10 AM or a bit earlier, I come from LA and take the Amtrak all the way to Downtown San Diego :) Last couple times I took the train we got delays so fingers crossed I make it by 10 :D

I will send you a message.

Thank you! I will do my best to make it happen even if have to go sleep deprived from working

Well don't ruin your visit due to your being too exhausted to enjoy it! I made that mistake when I flew to Madrid on an overnight flight assuming I would sleep on the plane (I did not) and then had myself heading straight from the airport to Faunia with all my luggage  I ended up passing out on a bench on top of my bag and I didn't really get to enjoy what is overall a very nice zoo.

I totally understand what you mean and you’re right, I don’t want to rush to only be fried by the end of the day. I’ll work on it this weekend so I can make a trip happen, I even purchased a new lens to show off better architecture/exhibit design for the new complex so wish me luck some actually takes my shifts

Hi everybody, I have a few questions about my next visit to the San Diego Zoo, in April:

- Is the kiwi visible? In which facility?
- Does the zoo keep tuataras?
- Is there still Chitra in the gharial facility?
- Is it possible to see Soemmering's gazelles, steenboks and giant elands or other rare antelopes?

Thank you!

1. No kiwis are on display, they’re BTS from what I was told.
2. Also BTS.
3. Which particular Chitra specie are you speaking of? I believe there is a Chitra Indica with the Indian Gharials but my turtle ID skills aren’t on par with others so I may be wrong
4. They have a small herd of Soemmering’s Gazelle with their Masai Giraffes, a sole male Giant Eland with Grevy’s Zebras, and no Steenbok. The SDZSP have Steenboks near the Africa Tram.

Chitra indica would be fantastic. It's a genre that interests me a lot, any species.

Bad news with kiwi,I was hoping to see them. I already assumed that the tuataras were offshow...

The kiwi exhibit was bulldozed to create the Africa Rocks complex, and there was never a replacement exhibit built. As Argus noted, there has been no way to see a kiwi for many years now.

The tuataras have never been on exhibit.

There are a few exhibits in the childrens zoo that hold ambassador animals.

It appears from their website that in the Rainforest theres a multi-level outdoor enclosure that houses rotating wildlife ambassadors. The photo shows a Coati, of which are also displayed in Wild Woods.

San Diego indeed exhibits Chitra indica in the gharial pond. I think there were two when I visited in August. They're massive and colorful animals so they'll stand out amongst all the other species but they also seem to like burying themselves in the sand in the shallow portions of the pool. There's a circular "pit" near the bank where they like to hang out. See here: Indian Narrow-Headed Softshell Turtle - ZooChat

The Soemmerring's should be easily viewable with the giraffes at the zoo and in their own habitat on the African tram at the safari park. The latter has over a dozen animals on-exhibit. The Cape Steenbok will also be at the safari park. On my last visit they had a younger animal living resident in the corral they display some of the handfed calves in. I've also seen them in the Sitatunga habitat though I'm uncertain if they're still there. The Giant Eland will still be on-exhibit with the Grevy's Zebras.
