San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2025

Discussions have previously centered around transforming the current Urban Jungle/Bear Grottoes into a new Asian themed area; so not Asian Passage specifically.

However with no current director, it's obviously not confirmed. We'll just have to wait and see where the next one will decide to go with things once they're hired.
And maybe make the rest of the Urban Jungle an African Savannah section, I mean where are they going to put their Giraffes and Zebras and it can blend in with the rest of Africa Rocks.

The Indian Rhinos would also move to the new Asia area.

Do we know what exactly happened with the honey badger? I feel like that was one of the most short-lived animal exhibits I've ever seen as of lately.

No idea, but they've been on and off exhibit since the start. It was reported they were finding ways to damage and potentially escape the exhibit, and had to be pulled to more solid holding. Likely same story again.

My personal opinion is that San Diego must be brutal and only keep polar bears in this area. The current enclosure is way too small and I didn't even see the polar bears on my visit across two days because it was too hot. Even an expansion into the reindeer enclosure would not be enough to reach the bar set by other zoos for modern polar bear enclosures. The enclosure must expand into the entire polar plunge area and would ideally have a larger indoor area that can be viewed by visitors if there is no other way to encourage the bears outside during the hottest weather.

Pending on the aviability of new polarbears after the current geriatric bears passes, wouldn’t the now off show hoofstock enclosures behind Polar beat plingen be a potential expansion area?

Gorilla Denny broke one of the layers on the tempered glass panels yesterday and the gorillas will be off exhibit until it can be replaced. It appears unclear how he broke it.

Can you tell me whether Denny has been living in a bachelor group? Had Paul Donn been in that group before he moved to the Safari Park?

Yes he moved in with his three half-brothers about two years ago. One has since died and another was moved to Kansas. Paul Donn was never in that group, he has only been with Jessica, though he lived with Denny until Denny came of age and was transferred over to the bachelor troop.

Thank you. I just wondered whether the departure of Paul Donn and Jessica was having any effect on behavior in Denny's group, but it seems pretty unlikely if the move to the bachelor group was two years ago.
He must have hit the glass just right during normal playtime! He was probably more surprised than anyone.

There is a White Brested Cormorant in the Penguin underwater viewing area! It has a sign also!

Denny was just being rambunctious, I heard he was running towards thr glass amd jumped to hit it but misjudged and slammed into the glass near a corner.

The glass panel has been reinforced the same as the last broken panel was. The boys are out still.

I had heard from a green shirt today that the Giraffe Calf born July 4, 2025 was renamed (also said Madoadoa was not a nice word?)?
Quite the fumble on the Zoo’s part! “Madoadoa” has been used as a derogatory, xenophobic slur in Kenya since the 1990s, used to target immigrant communities as “spots” or “blemishes” needing to be removed… Hopefully they make a public statement and apologize for this rather glaring mistake, as the organization has deep ties to the country…

In the meantime, the calf has been renamed, “Lemayian”, meaning “loved one” in Samburu.

Thank you!!
