San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park 2020

I saw the image and it looked like a striped hyena.
It must of the one of the animal ambassadors that they go with their handlers to meet people.

Someone in the comments on Facebook said it was on exhibit in Lion Camp, and the wall visible in the photo is very clearly the wall in the lion exhibit. I'm not sure if that's a permanent thing or temporary thing, a rotation of some sort, or even a thing at all. I went two weeks ago and didn't see hyenas (I also didn't see lions) so I was wondering if maybe the reason I didn't see any animals out was due to some sort of transition.

I just visited here on Sunday and did not see any hyenas in that exhibit. Nor were the lions on exhibit either, at least none were in sight when I viewed this habitat during the afternoon.

it is striped hyenas. Someone posted pics of them on Instagram in the lion exhibit at the park

They’ll have a fixed schedule in the future for times when to see the lions or when to see the hyenas as they are getting accustomed to the Exhibit.
This is an example of rotating 2 different animal Species on exhibit.

That would be amazing to see the Lion Camp exhibit rotated between the lions and striped hyenas. But it does have me wondering why the Safari Park doesn’t have a current hyena exhibit? Have they had a hyena exhibit before? It would fit with their mostly African theme collection and I imagine they can pull off a wonderful predator exhibit, perhaps in rotation with some other African predators like painted dogs or jackals :)

Walkabout Australia won Top Honors in Exhibit Design from the AZA! Well deserved in my opinion and one of my favorite areas to visit each time. The biggest reason to visit are the platypus and worth the stop, congrats to them and their work :)

I have to agree on this one. Walkabout Australia wasn’t just your average themed Australian exhibit. The platypus for one thing. It’s one of the few zoos that have Tree Kangaroos (correct me if I’m wrong) and they put A LOT of effort for the walkabout exhibit and the exhibit itself wasn’t just plain or basic. They rlly do deserve this award

They seem to doing something right at both parks for few years with their exhibits. Both my gf and I fell in love with Tiger Trail and Walkabout Australia when we visited for the first time last year, and who knows maybe the Children’s Zoo at the zoo will win too but who knows :D

Any news or construction that involves opening back up the Asian field exhibits to the public again I believe that’s what they really should do next after the children’s zoo area at the San Diego zoo after it opens next year?!

I haven’t heard or seen notice at the Safari Park from my last visit but will be going next week after a long hiatus, maybe I could ask some staff :)

Nope. No exhibits have been announced beyond the new children's zoo, the surrounding area with new Komodo dragon exhibit and hummingbird aviary, and the program animal complex. Keep in mind that this is a large project that will reshape a good chunk of the zoo.

Especially with the pandemic, it may be a few years before they announce anything new.

Even if they were going to reopen the field exhibits or do anything at the safari park it wouldn't start until next year or after that. Usually, they only have one major construction project happening at one time. Although it wouldn't shock me if they started surveying land for their next project so if anyone sees that sort of activity let us know.

When is the last time, a Somali Wild Ass was born at the Safari Park. Also, how many of them do they have?

I know there was one born last year when I was at the safari park. Often times the safari park doesn’t tend to announce the births of a lot of there animals just because they have a lot born on a day to day basis. It’s could be very much possible that there was some born this year and they just didn’t bother to say anything. They have well over a dozen Somali Wild Ass and I would say somewhere around 15-20 is the total
