sea gulls

Hello Leigh Catherick. I have enjoyed reading your thread very much and am happy someone is breeding gulls privately. I have never herd of anyone in the US breeding gulls or really any wading bird. It seems as though America is very strict with the private keeping of anything. I hope to keep and breed fowl one day. As of now I'm sticking to my herps but when I do get into birds I will be looking into the exotic partridge area.

I'm actually looking into a pair of Javan sparrows at my local pet store. I thought I read somewhere that you had some. If you do, how do you like them? I herd they were a somewhat more aggressive finch but that can also be good.
 
hi i did keep java sparrows great birds to keep i never had any great probs with them we had them with zebra finches and diamond doves ect in a large aviary they did steel the other birds nesting material but not to any major extent and they did breed well 6 chicks at a time we ended up with 40+ , like things do we kneaded the aviary for other birds so i just keep zebra finches now in a smaller aviary , hope this helps and enjoy the java sparrows top birds ,
 
still only one egg in the common gull nest and the pr are taking it in turn brooding it , think this could be normal for 1st time breeders as i remember years ago when herring gulls did still breed on cliffs and rock falls the 1st time breeders nested on the beach lower down and one egg was norm , just hope it hatches and they rear it ok ,

Thank you for advice on javans. Right now I just got a shipment of reptiles so it might be a while before things turn that way. When they do I'll most defiantly let you know how they are. :)
 
the common gull egg hatched today very exciting just hope they rear it ok they do seem very good parents and sure tell me off if i go within 10ft of them ,

Congrats Leigh! :D I'm very happy for you. Its always fun to have a successful hatchling. Lets hope everything goes well with the little one.
 
thanks, it was great today the sun came out at last and the little one sat by side of dad as he was feeding it and then mum took over doing the same , i was debating taking it to hand rear but i don't think i will as it defeats the whole reason for keeping them its so enjoyable to watch ,

Yes, The chick looks very good. I do really love the look of those Silver Gulls. There very beautiful. Have there been any signs of breeding? Does there behavior differ from your other gulls?
 
hi they are grey gulls , i would love to get silver gulls one day the greys did go through all the motions of breeding very vocal pr bonding display all the time but no eggs they even guarded a patch of sand fingers crossed for next year , the display is not like European type gulls they are more vocal at night allot more pleasant sounds from male and female together and in tern ,
 
Oh yes! Sorry for the mis-identification. I need a little brushing up on my gull sp. But your post has truly inspired me to research the possibilities of gull husbandry. Of coarse I'm certainly not even close to taking one on, but the more unusual stuff really interests me. Thats why I have girdled lizards and not a bearded dragon or leo. :rolleyes: Right now I have taken an interest in gulls as well as giant wood rails after ready your post on the pair and their young. By the way, how are they doing? Thank you for posting on zoochat. I probably would have never even given a gull a second thought before I saw this and your work with them.

P.S. have you owned any turaco sp.?:D
 
that's great news gulls are a fantastic bird species to keep in my experience you don't have to keep exotic species to really enjoy keeping birds, to hand rear gull chicks and get the chance to release them when old enough is very satisfying , to keep non releasable ones and see them having some kind of quality of life they do really well in captivity so many are destroyed real shame , i do keep rare birds like white winged wood ducks but my favourites are the gulls and my grey lag geese , i hope that i can interest people in keeping gulls and give them hope in our avian world , wood rail are moulting now so no more eggs lol iv never kept turacos ,
 
we now have a greater black backed gull and what a bird he totally dwarfs the herring gulls iv seen many greater black backed but when you see one from 5ft away you can really appreciate how large and magnificent they are i will get some pics on soon ,

Wonderful news! Was this one from a breeder or an injured bird?
