SeaWorld Orlando SeaWorld Orlando News

Thanks for the information both.

14 Belugas in that space seems mental - when was the last time this legislation was updated?

Zootierliste notes that Seaworld Orlando is the lone holder of elephant seal(s) in North America, though I have never heard of them having one. Does anyone know if they may be caring for one behind the scenes?

If true I’d love to know how it ended up there! I’m sure they’ve been held at San Diego before.

San Diego rescued one and then sent her to Orlando last year after she couldn't be released. She is a Northern Elephant Seal I believe.

Thanks both. That’s a shame she’s unable to be released. Hopefully she goes on display and they are able to find a friend for her.

I wonder what the intention behind this transfer is. Why sent a rescued animal from its natural environment (or rather: clima) to the wet subtropics of Florida?

Presumably they had the space to accommodate her off display (and San Diego didn't).

Seems to be a good/valid explanation to me on one hand. On the other hand: SW San Diego has kept rescued elephant seals on their grounds in the past (even on show, if I remember correctly).

They have a single individual BTS, I have heard of people that have been able to see her when they do a BTS tour. There was a rumor that they were trying to train her for the sealion and otter show....but I don't know if that is really true.

At one point, they were, not sure now

No official public announcement has been made yet, but according to the San Diego thread, @zoocentral has found out from some private trusted sources that the park will receive SeaWorld San Diego's emperor penguins (the only ones in the continent) later this month. Keepers from SWO have been seen visiting SWC to learn how to care for Emperors and are preparing for this transfer. Also, the park is due to receive a portion of San Diego's macaroni penguin colony as well.
