SeaWorld Orlando SeaWorld Orlando News

Edit to "The average life span in captivity is still significantly less". We haven't had orca's long enough to know how long they will live. Male orca's are closer to their wild average age than females. However Corky, Lolita and Katina are doing well. Sadly Kalina was the first captive born and she is now dead. It'll be a while before we get a true average for captive lifespan. Considering that most Sea Lions and Dolphins live well above their average wild lifespans, Orca's will get there too (Dolphins have been kept longer).

Oh look... the flood gates for PETALikes have opened... can't have a normal debate now.

Sea World Announces Big Expansion

Sea World Orlando and Discovery Cove announce big expansion plans, which will include small-clawed otters and marmosets at Discovery Cove, a new Turtle attraction and an Antarctica themed "land" to replace the Penguin Encounter at Sea World.

SeaWorld Orlando: Biggest expansion in SeaWorld Orlando history to include two new attractions next spring and an entire, Antarctica-themed "land" opening in 2013 - baltimoresun.com

SeaWorld Orlando this morning unveiled plans for two new attractions next year and an entire, Antarctica-themed "land" to open in 2013.

Terry Prather, president of SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment's three Orlando parks, called it the biggest expansion in the resort's history.

"It's time to really make a statement," Prather told a gathering of media, public leaders and company officials. "Only SeaWorld can bring the natural world to our guests and millions and millions of people each year."

In an elaborate presentation using a pair of indoor theaters and 10 big screens, SeaWorld unveiled the first concrete details of the additions.

One of those scheduled to open next year is TurtleTrek, an attraction SeaWorld said will take guests on the life journey of a sea turtle. Guests will first pass through a pair of aquariums, one with manatees and the other with sea turtles, and then enter a first-of-its-kind, domed, 3D theater. Images of sea turtles, created in what SeaWorld called "hyper-real" CGI, will appear to swim around and above guests.

The film will follow the life of a female turtle, starting from the next, said creative director Brian Murrow.

"We transform the theater into the egg of a baby sea turtle," he said. "The first thing you see is this egg hatching as the theater cracks open and we start to crawl out of our egg onto the beach to make our way to the ocean."

Along the way, guests will encounter several oceans, animals, shipwrecks and danger — both natural and man-made, Murrow said.

TurtleTrek is under construction at the previous site of the Manatee Rescue attraction.

"You won't recognize it when you see it," Prather said.

The second additon will be Freshwater Oasis, a new environment in SeaWorld's limited-admission park Discovery Cove. Guests will wade through a rainforest spring as small marmoset monkeys play in the canopy around them. They will then enter a faux sinkhole and wind up swimming alongside Asian river otters. The area will include secluded, private beaches and what appeared to be a swim-up lounge dubbed Flooded Terrace.

Both attractions will debut in the spring.

The following spring, SeaWorld will open an entire new area of the park themed around the icy continent Antarctica. It will take the place of the current Penguin Plaza section of the park.

Most details remain under wraps for the ride, although SeaWorld says it will be the "coldest theme-park attraction in the word."

The sit-down ride will also chronicle the journey of a young animal, this time a tiny penguin.

"We're going to be seeing this experience through his eyes – how he sees the ice, which isn't how we see the ice," Murrow said.

Exact temperature of the attraction was not shared.

"We can't dump people into the cold for enormous amounts of time. They'll be in shorts, and it is Florida," Murrow said. He said there will be a series of temperature changes, leading up to the record low.

The project is well into its planning. "We are riding prototypes," Murrow said. Expect construction walls for Antarctica to go up in January 2012.

Polar bear "Snow" (of the documentary Klondike and Snow fame) will be leaving the park this month to take up residence at Reid Park Zoo. (Reid Park's bear was shipped out to Pittsburgh this morning for a breeding recommendation).

Does anyone have any word on the Melon Headed Whale that was being rehabilitated here? How's it's health doing? Any chance a visitor could see the animal?

^yes, I would also be interested to know if a visitor could see the melon headed whale:)

I have visited SW Orlando last week (sunday, Nov. 20th). The melon-headed whale/pilot whale was not visible for the public. But as far as I know (according to the SW website), there were more then just one of this species in the rehab care.
So @ocean_boy or anyone who knows it: Are now all of the pilot whales dead or is one still alive?

Yes, they are both alive. Fredi, the youngest and also healthiest, is now living in the Dolphin Stadium with the false killer whale. And R-300 (the other pilot whale) is still at the new rehabilitation center. I do not know if the public is allowed to visit that area.

Here you can see some pictures and videos about 300 and her new orthopedic brace:

Thank you ocean_boy

That brings me to another question: I could swear I saw 2!!! false killer whales on the first day of my visit. I also purchased a dvd where 2 false killer whales were on show (Blue Horizons). But last sunday, there was only one false killer whale performing. So is one of them died recently or is this happen a longer time ago and my mind was to confused and fascinated because of the great show that I could'nt count to two anymore...;)?

SW has just one false killer whale, Jozu. She has been alone since Cassie died in 2008. I don't remember the exact date when Blue Horizons (the dolphin show) debuted but I'm sure that both animals used to perform in the show. However, after Cassie's death Jozu has not been with another animal of her own specie, unfortunatelly. She often shares her pool with Fredi and/or some dolphins, but it's not the same.

Dolphin bites girl at SeaWorld in Orlando; theme park defends response - latimes.com
Dolphin bites girl at SeaWorld. There'e a poll asking whose to blame, SeaWorld or the parents. 86% said parents and 14% said SeaWorld. I said the parents but was shocked to see that more people thought the same.

I know that this is quite an old post but I found it interesting because I was bitten by a dolphin at Seaworld quite badly (for my age) at around the same age as the little girl. It was a younger dolphin, probably about less than a year old, and it left five deep but small holes around my hand. I believe it was mainly my fault. The Dolphin Cove area runs/ed on a schedule for feeding and interacting times. We stopped by the area during feeding time. I stuck my hand in the water hoping to touch a dolphin and the youngster most likely mistook my fingers for food and bit down. I was crying and screaming but I was gladly treated immediately by staff and was taken to a small treatment center (can't think of the real word for some reason). They got my hand all bandaged up and all was well. So overall I wasn't mad at the dolphin nor did I grow a hate for Seaworld. So now why was this a big deal?
