Sedgwick County Zoo Sedgwick County Zoo News 2025

Omaha is germane as they have not had a bull to replace callee since his sedgwick move, but there are also a few African zoos that currently have multigenerational herd settings but don't currently house adept breeding males that could justly choose him. Indianapolis, North Carolina and Pittsburgh are in desperate there. The aforementioned 2 do have young bulls but had no real experience learning to breed, and both should move to other facilities for surplus bulls, and they both need naturally breeding guys in the near future. I guess lowry park and dallas could be contenders too. I know sdudla and tendaji have produced a few calves naturally, but I think it's time these two to move on and breed elsewhere and replace them with new bulls as they've both lived at Tampa and dallas for years.

Good news, tho I personally hoped he moved to omaha. Atlanta does say they can hold up to 7 adult elephants, which implies they eventually plan on doing breeding herds. But I guess atl now wants to be a bachelor facility.

The zoo has temporarily closed the Tropics exhibit and put its penguin encounters on hold after a case of avian flu was confirmed in a local chicken flock:

According to the comments section, they will have to wait for DNA testing to be sure. I would think chances are extremely high that Callee is the sire based on his history, but there is certainly a small chance it could be one of the other two.
I'm pretty sure part of why they moved Titan to Atlanta two months ago was for in case he still has not naturally sired calves at Sedgwick yet. TBF Titan is still rly young being in his mid teens, so it possibly could be a small number of years from now till they place him in a breeding facility. During my visit to the Dallas Zoo yesterday, I did my usual Q&As with the staff abt elephants, and their facility, and one keeper told me bulls will typically be natural dads and enter musth for the first time around the late teens-early twenties age range. I think Callee was a first dad at 21 in his Omaha years and now he's a breeding machine.

Bulls in the wild do not get to breed before 28-35 range as the cows will not stand for younger pubescent or not very mature bulls....

I think it's true that captive bulls will generally start breeding much earlier than in the wild. I read the mabu had his first calf at SDSP at 16 back in 2006.
