Mixed Elephant and Meerkat Exhibit
From the Shaldon newsletter
"We are extremely excited to announce that we have a fantastic new exhibit coming to Shaldon, that we are certain will draw in the crowds.
April the African elephant will be moving into the zoo this week! African elephants are the largest of the elephant species, and April will certainly not disappoint. Standing at just under 10ft at the shoulder, and weighing in at an impressive half a tonne we cannot wait for this gentle giant to make her home here with us.
In order to make room for April, almost all of the zoo’s current collection is being moved out. Nic Dunn, our Director says “Of course we will miss some of our original collection, but we really felt that taking on April and having just the one super sized exhibit would be far better for our visitors than lots of smaller ones”.
We will be keeping on one of our residents however, Jenna Crawford, Head Keeper notes “We took our meerkats to meet April earlier in the year, and they got on fantastically well. Provided April takes care where she steps the two species will mix together with no problem”.
Come and visit us this weekend to get the first look at April in her new home! Please note that a large portion of our perimeter fence will be missing due to this move however we are reasonably confident that April won’t be able to navigate out of the zoo and into the surrounding areas."
She is called April and today is the first.
