Shedd Aquarium Shedd Aquarium

I don't like the idea of hippos or pygmy hippos all the year round in only indoor exhibits, nevertheless how large the exhibit is. The idea, to keep bigger ammals only indoors, was born in the USA, and the problem is, its coming to europe.

Whta about the huge indoor exhibit for elphants at cologne zoo ß Its big enough, to keep uo to five or 6 elephants all the time indoors, and the huge, rocky outdoor exhibit could be used for polar bears, walrusses and Steller sealions.

So if hippos or pymy hippos don't need an outdoor exhibit, elephants don't need an outdoor exhibit also.or Giraffes, or rhinos...I think, to keep the cincy sumatran rhinos only inddors, would be a great option to stop their eye problems because the sunlight.

Nice video link Zooplantman, and one of the world's truly great aquariums will be even better than before! To be honest the video, while interesting, makes it seem as if not much has been altered in the Oceanarium. However, $50 million to spruce the place up has been spread out to not only animal exhibits but many visitor amenities as well.

Not to mention a sweet new set of offices with amazing lake views--opening up other space on the ground level for future development.

A second beluga was born December 20, unfortunately, it died yesterday for unknown reasons. But "Pujis" calf, born December 14, is doing well.

That's right, "Kri" also moved back with "Tique", but only Tique became pregnant. However, there is another dolphin from Shedd, "Piquet", currently living in Miami.

Why don't they just move the male from Miami to Shedd? that seems a lot more effective... Unless the seaquarium is unwilling because he is the companion animal for Lolita.

Well, the male is the most reliable performer in Miami and is a good companion for Lolita. In addition, the Seaquarium also has its own female who has had her lastest calf in 2009, so she might be ready to get pregnant again.

From what I've seen, Shedd seems like a much better home for ALL the dolphins than the seaquarium. I have visited the seaquarium and the orca/white sided dolphin enclosure is heart wrenching...
Hopefully the other dolphin "Piquet" comes back successfully pregnant!

Yes, Shedd is far better, it's bigger and deeper. Lolita's stadium is not big enought for an orca and five pacific white sided dolphins. Nevertheless, Miami has the only breeding male in the US (SW has two males but they are too young) so it seems that the breeding programme has to take place there because I don't see the Seaquarium sending one of their best performers to another facility. It's a real shame, cause Shedd has much more place.

Piquet's pregnacy is really needed. There are only a few PWS Dolphins in North America, and none of the Shedd females are related to any other dolphin in captivity. I like the way the Seaquarium, Shedd and SW (there is also a SW female in Miamia) are working together, the future of this specie in captivity in America depends on this programme. It would be wonderful to see the Vancouver Aquarium also participating, becuase it has a wild male which is really necessary.

Are there any news about the future expansion Africa of the Shedd Aquarium ?

I just came back from the Shedd after a vacation in Chicago for a week and asked a senior aquarist regarding any future expansion plans (specifically the Africa theme). As far as she knew, the idea, dream, and ambition is still their to expand, but preliminary planning hasn't even begun. So the exhibit is still many many years away.
