Singapore Night Safari Singapore Night Safari News

A male Nile Lechwe and a female Bongo have recently arrived. Not sure which park the Lechwe will end up in but the Bongo will eventually move to Rainforest Wild Africa.

Director of Prague zoo posted a pic of female bongo after her arrival to Singapore last month. It´s a calf born 16.January 2023 to parents Oskar and Raily, however I don´t know her name.

What subspecies are the dholes (which I heard will be moved to Rainforest Wild Asia)? Zootierliste doesn't specify a subspecies for them, so I wonder if they're lepturus like most everyone else has, or something rarer?

Are the new aardvark and maned wolf on display or they are still in quarantine?

Some observations from 2 visits this week:
  1. I saw a night heron in the Indian Gharial pond - looks like a Black-crowned Night Heron, and it was in the same spot during both visits. Anyone knows whether it was a wild one or the one from the marsh birds exhibit?
  2. Maybe an old news by now, but the 3 remaining tasmanian devils can now access both exhibits. IIRC the wood panel that connects the 2 dens has always been closed before.
  3. In both visits, the kiwi was much more active and frequented the front area. Previously, it was really hard to see the kiwi as it preferred to roam at the back. Taking a good photo of is still a challenge though. :(

Can't confirm on this until I double check with keepers but it should be a wild one, they've definitely made the Indian Gharial pool their spot though. Aside from the individual you photographed, I managed to spot a 2nd one around the small sand island while the park was closing at some point.

And glad to hear Claudius has been quite out being easier to spot, recently he's even been sleeping at the very front of the enclosure even when it's time for him to return back of house

Wild. There are exactly 3 birds that reside there if I recall correctly 2 by the main pond and one more that hides inside the Batagur's breeding pool at the back, and the previous keepers have a habit of feeding the herons too when we are tossing in fish for the Gharials and hundreds of G. hamiltonii in the pond. There is also a Blue-eared Kingfisher that lives here, it constantly hunts the thousands of Blue-streaked Haps (which was purchased by Mandai to consume the leeches on the crocs and turtles, though I always wondered how effective using Mbuna for pest control actually was) that reside in the pond and sometimes takes fish from the keepers too.

Is it possible to access this zoo during the day? I understand that it's practically impossible to see these animals during normal hours, at night. When I went, it was almost completely dark.

Thanks, I thought so. But then those day birds are impossible to see...

If it helps, regarding the Black Crowned Night Herons while they'd be hard to find I think you might be able to catch one eventually. There's a single individual that typically likes to stay by the land portion in the middle of the Gharial enclosure (Around the area in the photo that Honeybadger posted) , usually flying down around 8-9pm or earlier and it sometimes stays there until 11pm or closing time

It's usually there all the time, @Dr. Wolverine ran into it on his last visit if I'm not mistaken
