Thanks.Sure is!
I have a strange question to ask... Are the Singapore orangutans known to engage in homosexual behavior? There is a youtube account that uploads many videos of the "orangutan island" which seems to have a dominant male, a female and 3 sub-adult males. And here for instance is a video: ()
of the dominant male Satria mating with what I believe is the sub-adult male Budi? Although it seems that Budi suffers from hypogonadism, possible due to the inbreeding mentioned earlier. I did not realize orangutans engaged in such behavior.
This is how Gunta looks like now. He was born in Singapore Zoo in 2002. He’s now at Zoo Negara. His mother is Binte II and his father was Jojo.
It would be fitting to see this also in the Zoo Negara, Kuala Lumpur zoo thread. This is how Gunta looks like now. He was born in Singapore Zoo in 2002. He’s now at Zoo Negara. His mother is Binte II and his father was Jojo.
Orangutans usually seen on Island: Satria, Budi, Bino, Joko, Natu, AdiDoes anyone know what the current groupings are of orangutans? Which individuals can be seen by the public?
No problemThank you! I likely won't be visiting again until at least a year from now, but I do enjoy following Singapore's apes. Do you have any updated images or video footage of Bino, Joko, Natu, Adi, Ah Meng Jr, Niu Li, Putra or Khansa? I can imagine they have matured since my visit three years ago! It's impressive that they're managing to hold a bachelor group on the island. Is it only Budi who is neutered?
Am I correct that Chomel and Ah Meng Jr also used to free range? Is Binte still at the zoo? She was free-roaming with the three young boys when I visited.
There isn’t really a fix schedule for the two orang groups using the Sumatran enclosureHopefully they have some success with Chomel and Charlie soon, it is many years since the last orangutan infant was born.
So, generally Group 1 will use the Sumatran enclosure one day and Group 2 uses it the next? I’m very keen to see Chomel next time I visit as I missed her last time. She a daughter of an orangutan, Pusung, whom I knew well when he lived at Adelaide Zoo. I guess I’ll find out what the situation is nearer the time!
