Singapore Zoo Singapore Orangutan Population

I have a strange question to ask... Are the Singapore orangutans known to engage in homosexual behavior? There is a youtube account that uploads many videos of the "orangutan island" which seems to have a dominant male, a female and 3 sub-adult males. And here for instance is a video: (

of the dominant male Satria mating with what I believe is the sub-adult male Budi? Although it seems that Budi suffers from hypogonadism, possible due to the inbreeding mentioned earlier. I did not realize orangutans engaged in such behavior.

Homosexuality is not uncommon in non human primates. There have been studies showing wild orang utans engaging in homosexual behaviour, so it is not because of a captive grouping. One such study here:

Homosexual behavior in wild Sumatran orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus abelii) - Fox E.A.

This has been a great resource on the zoo's orangutans. Still missing Khansa's sire

Thank you! I likely won't be visiting again until at least a year from now, but I do enjoy following Singapore's apes. Do you have any updated images or video footage of Bino, Joko, Natu, Adi, Ah Meng Jr, Niu Li, Putra or Khansa? I can imagine they have matured since my visit three years ago! It's impressive that they're managing to hold a bachelor group on the island. Is it only Budi who is neutered?

Am I correct that Chomel and Ah Meng Jr also used to free range? Is Binte still at the zoo? She was free-roaming with the three young boys when I visited.

No problem:)
This YouTube account mainly post about Singapore Zoo orangs: https://youtube.com/@animalko-chan?si=mYOxeyHAzj2nJEiZ

Only Hybrids Riau and Budi are neutered. Yeah Chomel and Ah Meng jr used to free roam. Speaking of Chomel, I heard that there are attempts to produce an offspring between her and Charlie using artificial insemination. Unfortunately it has not been successful so far despite multiple tries. It’s been years since I last saw Binte ii, Labu, Medan and Miri. I’m not sure if they’re still in the zoo. I’ve never seen Galdikas before, I’m not sure if he is still around.

Hopefully they have some success with Chomel and Charlie soon, it is many years since the last orangutan infant was born.

So, generally Group 1 will use the Sumatran enclosure one day and Group 2 uses it the next? I’m very keen to see Chomel next time I visit as I missed her last time. She a daughter of an orangutan, Pusung, whom I knew well when he lived at Adelaide Zoo. I guess I’ll find out what the situation is nearer the time!

There isn’t really a fix schedule for the two orang groups using the Sumatran enclosure
