Singapore Zoo Singapore Zoo News 2011-2015

I don't know the situation of the zoo population of North American Brown Bear subspecies in Asia. But I think it could be difficult for Singapore to get one of those subspecies.
Most North American Brown Bears in European Zoos (Kodiak and Grizzly, but no Alaskan as far as I know) are very old and out of breeding age. And the last import from NA was one or two castrated Kodiak male(s) for a park in Sweden. As far es I know, US authorities (I don't know how it is with Canada) do not allow export of Bears in generall (and exceptions are very, very rare). So I guess there will be no export of North American Brown Bears either from Europe nor from North America to Singapore.
On the other hand, I can imagine that Singapore could get other (interesting) Brown Bear subspecies from Eurasia (e.g. Kamchatka, European, Mandchurian, Japanese etc.).

My opinion: When Singapore Zoo has built a new (and expensive?) exhibit for Polar Bears AND the exhibit does accomplish their needs, then it should also be occupied with Polar Bears.

When River Safari opens, or more likely before it opens, some species will leave the zoo for their new home. Such species include manatees and guanacos. Any idea of what will happen to their enclosures, and those of other species?

@zooboy28: the exhibits vacated will be redeveloped, but it will probably be done in phases.

I've got a question about the asian lions in Singapore. There must be two litters of them. Two males and one female in 2009 and three males in 2011. Did anyone know their names ? Are all of them still in Singapore Zoo?

Can't help with names... but the 2.1 from 2009 should have gone to Denmark during 2012. Unfortunatly the transfer fell through. Afaik they are still in Singapore since then

On WRS' facebook page, they have reported this news:

catch our collection of pumas in their new exhibit at Cat Country in the Singapore Zoo!

Presumably this is one of the first such redevelopments, with the Pumas (not previously - or at least not recently - on-display, but part of the Night Safari show), replacing the Jaguars which have moved to River Safari?

The puma have just inherited the former jaguar exhibit as it is. No upgrading of the exhibit whatsoever. I think it's an interim arrangement and the pumas will be phased out in the coming years.

In other news, the zoo has acquired a 6-year-old orange Bengal tiger from South Korea. She is being conditioned alone in the white tiger exhibit during selected days/times of the week. I'm guessing the plan is to eventually mix her with the sibling pair of white tigers (non-breeding group).

I see, so are there no longer Puma in the Night Safari show?

I was just about to post about the new tiger, I'd written most of it and then got an email about your post! Here is a link to the story anyway: Singapore Zoo - Exhibits & Zones - Exhibits - White Tiger It's not a pure Bengal Tiger though is it, I thought there were no pure Bengal's outside of India?

Nope, they've stopped using the pumas for the show for a few years now. The ones on display at the zoo now could be the retired show cats.

Probably not pure, as you've mentioned. There's a picture of her on WRS' facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/wrs.sg

When will the offspring of the Asian lions' breeding pair leave for EEP/Europe (as was agreed in the captive-breeding plan)?

Oh I see, they should take them off the NS map then! How many are there in the old jag enclosure? Are they all in that enclosure?

There is a new map (we got it during the zoochat singapore meetup) but they havent uploaded it onto the website yet. They've replaced the puma with a hyena an added the new tiger an black bear exhibits.

There were a pair of pumas in the enclosure when we saw it. There were 2 at night safari that were used for the show, so it could be the pair. Im not sure if they had other pumas off exhibit though.

Yes, I can;):

Common zebra (E. q. boehmi).
1 Baringo and - here I am not sure - 2 Cape/South african giraffes OR Angolan giraffes (they imported 2 Angolan from a zoo in Israel, but at my last visit about one month ago I was told that the other two are Cape and so the Angolians are maybe at Night Safari now).

PS: Only one Black/White-tailed Wildebeest/Gnu left at Singapore Zoo, so hurry!;)

Their website says that the giraffes at the Night Safari are Cape giraffes, but I'm not sure how up to date this is.

They imported Cape giraffes from Jerusalem Biblical Zoo. No Angolans are maintained in Israel.
at the time of the import the pair were announced as Angolan giraffes, from the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens. Currently the Tisch Family Zoo has Cape giraffes but they held Angolans formerly.

Alternatively, they were imported as Angolans but then re-identified as Cape?

Chlidonias, the 2 females Tamar and Roni are most definitely Cape giraffe (as their entire breeding herd is made up of the giraffa subspecies). The founder stock were directly imported from S.Africa - Umfolozi.

They only ever held a male reticulated till late 1987.

I guess it is a case of mistaken id / public announcement. :)
