Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2013

Wonderful news! Two clouded leopard cubs were born at SCBI Front Royal early this morning! The cubs are the second litter for mother Sita and father Ta Moon.

from the Smithsonian's National Zoos Facebook.

A Kiwi just hatched there too.

Breeding season is approaching (or predicted to) as the pandas behavior begins to change! I will not be getting my hopes too high, though. Even if she does get pregnant, there's a high mortality rate for panda cubs in captivity as expressed with this past years cub:(

Did the zoo ever announce anything possible Sumatran Tiger pregnancy? I suppose she never actually became pregnant?

Well, there may be cubs in a few months. It depends it the second round of mating sessions worked or not.

Don't lose hope! While Damai didn't conceive this time around (which isn't surprising, as they only had one bout of copulation), the pair has been breeding at a much higher frequency this time!

It is very likely that she will become pregnant this time, as there was much more stimulation and contribution to do so.

I was aware of this and that's why I changed my sentence from the original, "to bad they won't be having cubs this year."

I am hopeful as I'm an extreme optimist.

If she did conceive during this last heat, expect cubs to be born around the end of May or so

From the zoo's Facebook;
"It’s the countdown to the splash down! In a few weeks three gray seals and two harbor seals will join Selkie, our gray seal on American Trail! Gunthur, Kara, Kyja, Squeegee and Luke are behind the scenes right now in holding pools, but we hope in about a month they’ll be in the big pool. A few things have to happen before they make their public debut, though.

The five new seals are accustomed to salt water, but Selkie has been living in fresh water for a very long time. We will be gradually increasing the salinity of the seal pool for Selkie. We also want Selkie to be comfortable with five new seals living with her. So, we will be doing gradual introductions to make sure we do not overwhelm Selkie. The new seals all came from the Adventure Aquarium in New Jersey and are already very familiar with each other. Finally, all the seals have training goals that they will be working toward. Learning training behaviors helps keepers with daily health checks and provides the animals with mental stimulation.

In about a month we think the seals will all be on exhibit – it will be a pinniped pool party!"
