Lion Updates - National Zoo

The website says sloth bear cub Remi is beginning to be taken out to explore the outdoor exhibit. If you get lucky you might catch her.

A large portion of the zoo is now closed as they wait the arrival of the elephants today according to the zoos page. An update will be issued once all three are in the barn.

That takes on clever keeper to come up with that. I wonder if they have ever let other animals play with a keyboard. I would think the apes and monkeys would love it too. But some bird species would aslo get a kick out of it. Maybe the elephants. Thanks for posting the link.

After viewing Maharani from above next to Kamala and Swarna, I think it is safe for me to presume that she is indeed pregnant (she could just be rotund). The general rule of thumb is to transfer pregnant females prior to their 16th month of pregnancy..... so could DC be expecting a baby elephant by the end of the year? Possibly... (if not early 2015)

If she is indeed pregnant people should keep their expectations low. She has been pregnant 3 other times and it has not produced a surviving calf yet. Hopefully DC will be more successful in building the mother calf bond, preventing disease in the calf and gettting it to survive. It would be great for them to have a brand new calf with Spike's totally unrepresented genetics. Spike's parents were imports and while his father is alive and quite old, his mother and 3 siblings are dead with no relatives other than Spike.

Here's a video clip of the otters playing the keyboard again but if you skip towards the end you can watch one of the orangs playing on a baby's piano and Remy the sloth bear cub enjoy playing the harmonica. Shorter clips but equally enjoyable.
