Do you mean Romeo is NOW at Fort Worth? I've just been assured that CEC has plenty of frozen Romeo sperm, so perhaps their AI successes have been with frozen sperm, which is a huge step forward. Thank you!

Sorry, yes i meant "now", i fixed the typo above! nice catch. I'm curious to see how Romeo will do in the future at FW and curious to see who will be paired with who seeing as how now they have 2 potential breeding bulls.

Also is Indy's transfer a for sure thing? I haven't herd or seen anything about it before reading it here.

LOL I'm an English professor teaching writing, so I'd be in bad shape if I couldn't catch typos! I never would have mentioned it, though, if the meaning of the sentence weren't so important!!

I heard some months ago that FW's Angel was the only pregnant Asian in US zoos. Depending on when she was bred, the sire could be Casey, Romeo, or Colonel. With unproven studs like Casey and Colonel, they would have probably tried several, perhaps with AI, to ensure success, so results may not even be known for paternity until after the calf is born.

Yes, Indy is a sure thing. Although the elephant house's "annex" could house a second bull temporarily, Indy is a "lot of bull" to manage, and they are clearly waiting for Kandula's departure for OKC. Staff from Syracuse, Indy's longtime home, will be coming to work with NZP staff for a crashcourse in managing him. They're clearly choosing to focus first on Kandula, then on Indy. Kandula has always been a very entertaining character to observe. I will miss him dearly, but I'm anticipating that Indy's big personality could help fill a lot of the void. LOL Indy, it would seems, regularly threw things at elephants and humans who displeased him!

I did get a clarification on his breeding plans over the weekend, however. Plans for Indy go back far enough that part of the plan was for him to breed Shanthi, since he's the one bull with success, they know each other, etc. However, as many suspected, this ship has long since sailed. Her last calf was 14 years ago, and NZP stopped AI attempts nearly 5 years ago. So the plan now is for Maharani for have Indy all to herself.

PS Kandula's departure should be coming up very soon. His official 'farewell" ceremony for members only is at 8 AM this Saturday before regular elephant house hours. He is, of course, on regular exhibit to until his departure. They don't usually announce departures of large animals until they've happened, and they almost always happen at night; such moves require large machinery and vehicles to get into the zoo proper, and much of
the zoo would have to be closed off to prevent injury if done during the day.

I wonder how their pairing will turn out and if they will produce a healthy calf. I know both have lost offspring to EEHV.

Kandula will coincidently be heading to my local zoo and i can't wait to see him. He will definitely lift spirits around the okc area I'm almost positive he and Chandra will be an exciting pair to watch. As for Indy im excited he will again be returning to an exhibit where he can been seen by the public, he's definitely an impressive bull.

Don't Rex and Chandra get along? Sister Asha had two calves while Chandra had none over the last 5 years, was wondering why. I'm so sorry about Malee; I loved watching videos of her and seeing the delight she brought to fans. We're hoping to take a 3-week-long (very very very long) roadtrip from NJ down to Houston and FW next year, catching the zoos in OH, MI, and OK along the way. I can't wait to see your beautiful exhibit and the truly multigenerational herd you've established. And maybe Kandula too. :)

I have a feeling (having seen Angel in person recently) she is over the halfway point in her pregnancy as she is "showing" to the trained elephant eye....
I would suspect Colonel is the sire, although the zoo has produced a calf through AI courtesy of Albert @ ABQ Biopark... So I would say, either of the two?
I know she miscarried (or delivered stillbirth) late term around the time of the birth(s) of FW's other calves in 2013. So this one should have an increased potential for survivability.
I would expect the calf to be born in spring or early summer of next year

(moderators, sorry this isn't related directly to the National Zoo)

The members-only Kandula farewell from 8-10 tomorrow morning is filled to capacity with a waiting list. There is, however, going to be a duplicate of these events for the general public from 10-12, with some big sendoff at noon. dcpandafan, are you going to memorialize this event with your photographic talent?

(The answer to that may determine whether I decide to get up with the larks and drive four hours to attend in person!)

Maybe but you gotta remember i'm only a kid it's not like I can just drive or take the metro. My mom and brothers want to go to the farmers market but she said "we'll see" aka no but because I don't want you to feel bad i'll say there's a chance.

Wait what? Photographic talent? My photos are crap compared to most people on this site.

lol I think you just made my point about your photographic talent. I was trying to think if i could give you my FONZ number as a way to get in at 8 AM if I come up on the wait list, but then I realized they'd want my actual membership card.... I'm hoping someone out there can take some good photos of the event.

We went last week for our farewell. Kandula's one of a kind, just so much personality and intelligence. I'm going to miss him a lot, but then he looked at me and turned to walk back up toward the bridge. As I looked at that confident swag in his gait as viewed from behind, I realized he's ready to go out there in the world. And I'm ready to let the world have its chance to experience him. Everyone was devastated by the death of Kumari, and it's as if our collective suffering was rewarded with this unique combination of delightful diva whippersnapper that we've had nearly 14 years to treasure.

Wait sorry I'm stupid I don't understand the first part.

My problem would be getting there I have a fonz card.

With so many bad statistics about EEHV deaths, it may be heartening to remember that some have survived the virus. I'm almost certain Indy's daughter Karina was one of those lucky few (or was it sister Mali?) Perhaps studies of the immune response in these survivors will help with the development of a vaccine.

I'm gonna miss seeing him to and you're right he really was special. Kandula has never seemed like a normal elephant to me its like he's of another species {one that tends to be active a lot} and he's just stuck in an elephant body. Kumaris death probably was a really depressing time for the zoo and the visitors that loved the elephants but I think her death led the way for a great discovery that can help elephants worldwide

I Your screen shot choices and clouded leopard pic confirm my assessment of your photographic ability!

Once again I don't understand what you mean. I'm only 14 i'm not that smart.

Also I think this is a good time to say this so people don't assume I take all the pictures I post. My mom takes pretty much all of the pictures that are in exhibits that are indoors, some outdoors and the orangutans because they're her favorite animals.

Don't worry she knows I post them.

Also I've posted a picture of a clouded leopard? I need to get up to date with my pictures.

Here's a blast from the past--do you go back far enough to remember when there was a polar bear down on the site that became Amazonia? I was so crushed when they sent him away that I boycotted Amazonia for years. Yes, Smokey was there, and a wonderful old Kodiak bear whose name I remembered fondly for years.

I found these pictures from 1973.

OMG Thank you! I had begun to think I had imagined the cub! For 1973, this was a good exhibit, ahead of its time in terms of size, pool, terrain to climb, interest, etc. It had to have been newer, making it all the more ridiculous to tear it down.

Now, this may sound far-fetched, but I swear this wasn't all there was to the exhibit. I think the grottos seen here were up above American Trail perhaps where the Giant Anteaters are today, and standing where Amazonia is now, one could see the bear underwater behind a giant piece of glass, much like the underside of the sea lion exhibit. I can't phenagle it in my head how this would have worked with the hillside, but I swear I remember seeing the polar bear underwater. Am I experiencing early dementia?!?!?

This might help you find where the exhibit was.
