Apologies to ZC rules. I failed to add any "content" in my haste to post the link above the other day. It's called a member newsletter in my Inbox, so I never know if I may be the only one to get and post it. The entire newsletter was enormous this, which I think is a splendid way of keeping people feeling involved while zoos aren't open. I think everyone should be doing more of this. Somehow Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Oregon Zoo have acquired my email address, and I'm enjoying the very frequent updates so much I'm only mildly bothered that someone clearly sold it to them!

If a mod could join this paragraph with the orphan link, I'm told that may save it from deletion!

They are still at the zoo but off exhibit. Behind where the prarie dogs and american porcupines are. Still three of them: Yoda, Cheese, and Ollie

Interesting, so they are still there. Were they taken off exhibit because of the escape that happened in 2017? And do you know if caracal are off-exhibit but still present as well?

They were supposed to renovate the bobcat exhibit after the escape, but nothing has been modified yet. The zoo no longer has caracals and the exhibit is empty. I believe they are now phased out after their last individuals died.

I never knew there was off-exhibit space in the zoo. It would seem every nook and cranny is well-utilized. I especially liked that use of space for the caracals, and the whole outdoor reptile complex is just an aesthetically stunning space. Have they put anythjng in the yard across from the elephant house yet? Have the new bison arrived yet?

Some sad news from the National Zoo:

Asia Trail keepers at the Smithsonian National Zoo are mourning the loss of Remi, a 6-year-old female sloth bear who was humanely euthanized May 2, following a foot wound that was not healing despite medical treatment.

Remi was the only surviving cub of three born to female sloth bear Khali Dec 29, 2013, at the zoo. It is always preferable for cubs to be raised by their mothers, but that was not possible given Khali’s inability to care for her offspring. Keepers knew the only way that Remi had a chance to survive was to hand-raise her.

Although she was paired with the Zoo’s 5-year-old male, Niko, Remi never gave birth to any cubs.

The camel exhibit is still there. I knew it as the Przewalski Horse exhibit though. Does anyone remember when Przewalski Horses were at the zoo for the public?

Did they have an exhibit other than the one next to the reptile house?

The Przewalski's horses always lived in the old camel exhibit next to the small mammal house, at least since they replaced the camels.
