Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2020

Well that answers the question of the "nobody home" signs posted at her exhibit.

Elderly Gray Wolf Dies at Smithsonian’s National Zoo
Before Coby died, there was already nobody home signs. The zoo said that she had a fracture on her bone and I guess that she was not out shortly before she passed was because of the fracture. Coby was 16 years old which was very old for a wolf and she lived a good life. Also when was the last time you saw Coby outside in her habitat?

Sounded Like she spent a lot of her last few weeks at the animal hospital after her procedure. Would explain why the exhibit was empty for so long.

I know they were up before she died, but I knew she was old. I speculated she could've died or been having health issues, which we now know she was.

I have absolutely no clue when I last saw her on exhibit. I honestly don't know if I ever did in the last couple years, especially after Crystal died last year.

I did see her in March before lockdown hit and was pretty active around the exhibit in the am. Interested to know if they'll continue to exhibit gray wolves or move to Mexican or red wolves or a different species entirely. Most likely with COVID, the exhibit will remain empty for some time.

Wallabies are further back. Horses are along the main path.
Thank god there finally putting something in that exhibit. How late no has in been empty? I don’t remember there old Przewalski’s horse having access to this yard.

11 different species hatched at the Bird House over the summer, resulting in 34 total chicks.
Summer is for the Birds
Interesting, I think it will then start a trend for zoos in the US possibly internationally to start breeding and exhibiting their local native smaller birds like songbirds and wading birds more (Mostly those that can’t be released to the Wild due to health injuries or too imprinted on humans). I know Akron Zoo has done so when they opened Grizzly Ridge with a treehouse aviary.
Are there other zoos that might of followed on this?
