3.0.0 Southern Cheetah are due to arrive from Sweden (Boras?) on 18th September. They will replace resident female, Mia who is moving down to WHF today

and they have now arrived... names are Martin, Bjarani and Keene

If the Paradise Wildlife Park decides to breed from the white tigers, it will be for financial reasons. For the general visitor, white tigers are more attractive than ordinary coloured tigers. The general visitor isn't bothered about the genetic problems linked to the white tiger. As most races of tigers are represented in hundreds in zoos, the idea that tiger breeding is done for conservation purposes is, generally speaking, misleading. Apart from a project in South Africa (Tiger Breeding | Save China's Tigers), there is little attempt at breeding captive tigers for introduction into the wild. As tigers require a large area of habitat and suitable feeding stock, there is relatively little suitable habitat and much of this is near areas of high human population. If PWP breeds white tigers for commercial reason, this is also true for the reason why many other zoos are breeding tigers. It's a pity that zoos aren't making more effort to try and breed less popular species, which could be used in reintroduction programmes.

A sad day for PWP...

From parks Facebook

It is with the deepest regret that we must announce a very sad day at Paradise Wildlife Park. Sadly Indy, our tiger and Aron, our Snow leopard both passed away. Indy, who has been at the park for 16 years was taken very ill over the last 24 hours. She was anaesthetised so that a medical check could be carried out, and during that examination a severe tumour was discovered. In the best interests of Indy's comfort, she was never brought out of the anaesthesia. Aron had developed a complicated swelling on his rear leg that was beginning to restrict his movement. Despite expert, specialist attention, we were unable to reverse the swelling. Also in the best interests of his comfort, he was sadly put to sleep. Our thoughts are with the animal park team at this time who are devastated by these events.

A shame however they were not exactly 'young cats'. 'Aron' was the last Snow Leopard from PWP's breeding family, he had two cubs with their old female ('Mizi'?) before she died of cancer. The pair's cubs are now in Hungary and somewhere else in Europe.

Fifteen Black-footed Penguins die at Paradise Wildlife Park after contracting Avian malaria and Aspergillosis disease

sounds like some more zoos may be hit as well as london and paradise

Panja, a male Snow Leopard arrived from the Czech Republic this morning. He replaces Aron who died in Autumn 2012

Visited today, 17/02/2013, was very surprised to see a pair Raccoon Dogs in the enclosure next to the Squirrel Monkeys. I am unfortunately un-aware of the sex, and where they arrived from, but was quite excited to see them as this was a personal first.

Other news, there has been a very exciting, yet I'm sure controversial birth amongst this forum. A female White Lion was born on 26th January, you could see the cub through the windows in the doors. Appeared to be doing very well, I shall now wait and watch the expected discussion begin.

You might be disappointed, unlike White Tigers (which are all hybrid and often severely inbred) White Lions usually represent one of the few (if not the only) pure sub-species of African lions on display in the UK/Europe.

Some people may take issue with inbreeding issues but I'm really not sure of the Paradise bloodlines so I wouldn't know for certain if there are any such issues.

I'm fairly sure the West Midlands stock (from where the Paradise lions came from) are pure sub-species but I'm not sure whether they've been mixed up a bit at Paradise. I'll leave others who know better than me to comment/confirm the situation.

It's been well over a year since I've been to paradise but I know the raccoon dogs were from a private collection, not sure if they are a sexed pair though or related.

I think they are in the avairy which is an unusual one, it once held blue and gold macaws, then 2 male skunks and now the raccoon dogs. How did you feel about the size of it? If it's the one I'm thinking of it's circular and not the largest enclosure for them.

That is indeed the avairy they are in. I believe it has also held foxes for a short time, certainly on of those enclosures that seems to have a new species every time I visit. It is adequate for the time being, they were asleep for the whole day, so couldn't really compare the size of the species to the size of the enclosure, but I'm hoping this will only be temporary, because it did appear considerably too small long term.

Yes hopefully they will be moved into a longer enclosure. The one the are in is more suited to birds or an arboreal mammal really.

African Lion, Turkana has been PTS today at the age of 17 following the discovery of a large tumour... :(

The PWP Facebook page has released a spoof music video of their keepers and animals, to show what a fun place they are. It has been put together really well and is funny, take a look

Jaguars are due to return to the collection following an enclosure move round - The White Tigers have moved elsewhere in the zoo, and their former enclosure (which held Jags until 2011) is now freed up for them to return to holding Jags again :)

1.0 Jaguar has arrived today. Allowing them to now keep the species full time at both Broxbourne and WHF

Update on there Facebook page:
Sadly last night saw the passing of one of our oldest and much loved animals. Roz the red panda lived at Paradise Wildlife Park for 13½ years and came to us when she was 1 from Edinburgh Zoo.

Anyone who had the pleasure to have met Roz was always touched by her gentle nature, cheerful personality and enthusiasm for grapes and pear! She was a loving companion to our male panda Teajmunn for many years and though pandas are not normally social animals the two often snuggled up together on a cold night.

The keepers will miss her terribly but her memory will always live on, especially in the panda enclosure that is currently a hive of activity with Teajmunn, Tilly and her two thriving cubs.
