Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species Mammalian and Non-Mammalian

In Mexican zoos lions and tigers are often found, as they breed well here. Jaguars are quite common as are both pumas and bobcats.Ocelots and margays are also present in many collections. Of our native felids, the jaguarundi is least exhibited. Some zoos have leopards,but not many. At present no mexican zoo has cheetahs. Chapultepec has a male snow leopard and Leon zoo has an elderly female snow leopard. That is the situation of felids in mexican zoos.

They’re a good investment
Personally, I'd challenge the notion that they're a "good" investment. Most cats sleep for large parts of the day, and a number of the small cats are notorious for hiding in places where visitors can't see them. In this regard, they're the type of animal that I'd argue makes for a poor exhibit animal, so I can easily see why zoos wouldn't want to invest in them. Most zoos have some of the Panthera species because people expect to see lions and tigers in zoos, but even Panthera I'd say aren't really that great of exhibit animals due to their inactivity and large space requirements. While I'm not saying all zoos should phase out cats from their collection, I do think it's a group that is more common than their behavior, conservation status, and educational potential likely warrants.

Now that I'm finished with PRIMATES (141 species) and FELINES (28 species), I'm going to roll right into CANINES.

Family Canidae is an interesting one as in the 800-page All the Mammals of the World (2023) there is no inclusion of either Dingos/Dingoes or New Guinea Singing Dogs. Fascinating. One animal that is in that book and the one that I've seen the most is of course the Wolf.

There's been a LOT of different examples of signs for wolves at all the zoos I've visited, and I'll list Red Wolves on another day, but today's post will focus on what I've labeled as Gray Wolf at each zoo. Or in the case of Canadians, we like to spell it in the British style as 'Grey'. ;) There's been plenty of all-white animals with signs for Arctic Wolves, or other names such as Timber Wolves, European Wolves, Eurasian Wolves, Vancouver Island Wolves, Mackenzie Valley Wolves, or Alaskan Wolves, and there's even a full species known as the Eastern Wolf. Would I have seen Eastern Wolves in captivity? A number of the zoos on this list have had signs saying 'Wolf' in a very generic fashion.

Along with having a separate post about Red Wolves (a famously contentious full species), I'm also going to have a separate post about Mexican Wolves (a subspecies of Grey Wolf) simply because they are quite distinct and I've seen them at a fair number of zoos. Perhaps I will then merge my Grey Wolf and Mexican Wolf posts later in the week. Wolves must go by more names than perhaps any other mammal I can think of, with an endless list of subspecies.

Overall, I've seen Grey Wolves in 94 zoos. Generally, wolves do quite well in zoos and much like Cheetahs it's possible to have a spacious chain-link yard that will suffice to keep the animals well-maintained and healthy. Some type of treed area is best, allowing for shade and cover as wolves can be secretive mammals, and it's nice to see some exhibits with rolling terrain and a little bit of height via a raised area.

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park (USA) has a log cabin viewing area and then a slice of forest for its Grey Wolves. Much like many of the exhibits at this zoo, it's quite remarkable.

For many years, the Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) had at least 5 American Black Bears and several 'Vancouver Island' Wolves all together in a 10-acre habitat that could only properly be seen via a bus tour. This setup ended at least a decade ago. Here's an image of what a small part of that space looked like:

Zoo Montana (USA) has a spacious Grey Wolf exhibit that is lush and green in the summer and then somewhat denuded in the wintertime. Either way, the wolves have a large area to roam.

@Pleistohorse

Yellowstone Bear World (USA) had some white-coloured Grey Wolves in with American Black Bears when I drove through that part of the park in 2014. As long as there is a significant amount of space for both species, the combination of bears and wolves seems to work at many zoos around the world.

But, the flipside is that a facility like Como Park Zoo (USA) has Grey Wolves behind chain-link fencing and then after a small strip of meadow it's all forest. Seeing them there is a real challenge and if visitors don't get even a glimpse of a wolf then that becomes a disappointment.

There's not an issue in seeing two all-white Grey Wolves in their cement bunker home at Wildwood Wildlife Park (USA) in Wisconsin. The exhibit does stretch farther to the right, but it's pretty poor and I took this image in 2014. My hope is that the two wolves are not still sitting there!

Of course, Pairi Daiza (Belgium) took a mixed-species idea to a whole other level when they opened their British Columbian themed new 'world' a few years ago. I'm not sure what this exhibit looks like now, but at one point there was at least 11 Brown Bears and a bunch of Grey Wolves all together. I'm guessing that the numbers are a bit lower these days, but regardless some of the viewing areas are spectacular.

This exhibit houses 'Canadian' Wolves, or 'Mackenzie River' Wolves, or 'Northwestern' Wolves or 'Timber' Wolves, depending on what photo label an individual looks at in the ZooChat gallery for Erlebnis Zoo Hannover (Germany). Perhaps these should be called 'Miner' wolves. ;)

I saw a huge pack of Grey Wolves at Osnabruck Zoo (Germany) in a wonderful themed area based on the Province of Manitoba in Canada. The African and North American zones at Osnabruck are arguably the highlights of that zoo, along with the amazing 'Underground Zoo'.

Then there's the 3.7-acre, massive habitat for Grey Wolves at Scandinavian Wildlife Park (Denmark), and when I was there in 2022 the smell was awful as a rotting carcass was sitting out in the open. When I toured Scandinavian zoos that summer, it was quite common for huge chunks of stinking meat to be lying around inside carnivore enclosures.

The newest Grey Wolf exhibit in an American zoo is found at Big Bear Alpine Zoo (USA), a brand-new facility that relocated and opened in 2020. They provide homes for rescued animals, but the wolf enclosure is a bit small for something so new.

I know I said I wouldn’t mention Stone Zoo again on this thread, but for this specific animal, I can’t pass up this opportunity.

For all of my grievances for this zoo, their wolf exhibit is legitimately fantastic and the best enclosure from either Zoo New England zoo. Stone Zoo may have several shortcomings, but it’s not a total failure.

While I happen to like Stone Zoo more than you, I definitely agree with your take on this exhibit. Definitely the strongest wolf exhibit I've seen anywhere. It's also home to the critically endangered Mexican grey wolf, which is really great to see.

I've seen Mexican Wolves, one of the many subspecies of Grey Wolf, in 24 zoos. Exactly half of my sightings occurred in 2008 and 2010, when I toured a lot of big AZA zoos. Also, I've only ever seen this subspecies in American zoos.

How many total zoos is that for Gray Wolf ("generic" + Mexican)?

In exact chronological order, including all 'generic' Grey Wolves and Mexican Wolves, I've seen 'Wolves' at 113 zoos. (Red Wolves will be tomorrow)

When I compiled all my data last year, I separated the wolves into Grey Wolf, Mexican Wolf and Red Wolf, and I also added in the subspecies commonly labeled as Eurasian Wolf, which I've seen at 16 zoos. Other than Red Wolf, a separate species, and Eastern Wolf, also a separate species these days, it's all rather a mute point as basically all the tons of wolf subspecies add up to all being Grey Wolves and I'll update my final Grey Wolf list at the bottom of this post. (I broke down some of my lists into subspecies to essentially force myself to do a heck of a lot more work!)

1- Zurich Zoo (Switzerland) – Mongolian Wolf – 2003
2- Langenberg Wildlife Park (Switzerland) – Eurasian Wolf – 2003
3- Artis Royal Zoo (Netherlands) – Eurasian Wolf – 2019
4- Safari Parc Monde Sauvage (Belgium) – Eurasian Wolf – 2019

6- GaiaZOO (Netherlands) – Eurasian Wolf – 2019

Safari Parc Monde Sauvage (Belgium) is like many other zoos in that there's a log cabin in the background for the zoo's Eurasian Wolves. Everywhere in the world, wolves must hang out at log cabins. :p

I've seen Grey Wolves at a staggering 129 zoos, which far exceeded my expectations. There's still Red Wolves to come in the next post, but when I'm done this epic project then I wonder if there will even be 10 mammal species that I'll have seen more than wolves. Tigers and Lions for sure, Ring-tailed Lemurs are around in massive numbers, and a handful of others, but wolves are incredibly common in zoos everywhere. Also, they can sometimes be found in large numbers, with big packs of animals in some of these facilities, or multiple enclosures for rotational purposes. Will wolves crack the top 10 most common mammals? We shall see...

1- Zurich Zoo (Switzerland) – Eurasian Wolf – 2003

These were Mongolian Wolf, which are highly distinct at a genetic level and hence worth keeping a note of - sadly Zurich sent their group away last year, so I missed this taxon during my first visit a few days ago!

9- Berlin Zoo (Germany) – Eurasian Wolf – 2019
10- Berlin Tierpark (Germany) – Eurasian Wolf – 2019

These two will have been generic zoomix wolves when you saw them - with North American and domestic blood in the mix! I think you've possibly counted a few other zoomix as Eurasian too, but as I'm currently on a train in Austria I can't double-check right now :D

I have never seen a zoo more devoted to wolves than DeYoung Family Zoo - kind of ironic considering they market themselves as "The Home of the Big Cats. They devote a massive amount of species to three different Gray Wolf subspecies: MacKenzie Valley Wolves, "Tundra Wolves" and Timber Wolves (aka Gray x Eastern hybrids).

Depending on how you define Gray Wolf, they way also keep two other subspecies well, considering they also have Dingo and New Guinea Singing Dog.

I've seen Red Wolves at 22 zoos, which again was a surprisingly high number. All of those zoos were between 2005 and 2015, an astonishing period where I saw a lot of Red Wolves. According to Zootierliste, there's none in any European collections and only 4 European zoos (Bremen, Cologne, Halle, London) have ever even kept the species.

I already posted my total of 129 zoos with wolves, and adding 20 of them below (because both Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo and Endangered Wolf Center were already counted with their Grey Wolves), gives me a running total of 149 zoos with some kind of wolf.

1- Point Defiance Zoo (USA) – Red Wolf – 2005
2- Lincoln Park Zoo - Illinois (USA) – Red Wolf – 2008
3- Knoxville Zoo (USA) – Red Wolf – 2008
4- Fort Worth Zoo (USA) – Red Wolf – 2008

The first time I ever came across Red Wolves was at Point Defiance Zoo (USA) in 2005 and in 2010 the zoo opened a pair of brand-new exhibits called Red Wolf Woods.

Point Defiance Zoo has done more for Red Wolf conservation than perhaps any other facility in the world, with a large off-show breeding center at their 'sister park' Northwest Trek. At Point Defiance Zoo, there is a large wall display highlighting the work the zoo has done for this rare species.

Neither are included as full species in the publication All the Mammals of the World (2023), which is what I've been using as a broad guideline, but I've seen Dingoes (or Dingos) and New Guinea Singing Dogs quite a few times in my zoo-touring life. I figure that it would be of interest to include them here, but I guess I won't count them in my final Canidae totals. I've never seen either of these mammals in a European collection.

I've seen Dingoes at 5 zoos and possibly a couple more from when I lived near Perth from 1986-1988.

1- San Diego Zoo (USA) – New Guinea Singing Dog – 2008
2- Zoo Miami (USA) – New Guinea Singing Dog – 2008

It seems Kansas City went for a long stretch with Dingo, then Singing Dog, and now is back to Dingo. The zoo had Dingo on my first visit way back in 1995, but then as you note, had singing dog in the late 2000s. On my last couple visits in 2020, 2022, and 2023, they are back to Dingo.

2- Zoo Miami (USA) – New Guinea Singing Dog – 2008
3- Kansas City Zoo (USA) – New Guinea – 2010

Here's a Dingo at Taronga Zoo (Australia). There's still some scientists that argue about this mammal being a full species.

@WhistlingKite24

I saw Dingoes at Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo (USA) in 2010, which at the time was a revelation as they were probably the only ones in America at that time.

Toledo Zoo (USA) had Dingoes when I was there in 2018:

New Guinea Singing Dogs have been much more common in zoos in comparison to Dingoes.

Back in 2008, this was an exhibit for New Guinea Singing Dogs at San Diego Zoo (USA):

Zoo Miami (USA) in 2008:

ZooTampa at Lowry Park (USA) had a smallish enclosure for New Guinea Singing Dogs in 2012 that included some interesting wooden platforms.

Palm Beach Zoo (USA) had a small enclosure for New Guinea Singing Dogs in 2012. This is one of 3 Florida zoos where I've seen these mammals.

Just last year, I saw a New Guinea Singing Dog in a big, barren enclosure at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park (USA). This zoo also held these dogs when I was first there in 2011.

Here's a small, crappy, chain-link cage for New Guinea Singing Dogs (with a tire in the middle!!) at Animal Haven Zoo (USA). Nasty!

This enclosure is possibly even smaller at Wilderness Walk Zoo (USA):

Equally shoddy is this cage for New Guinea Singing Dogs at GarLyn Zoo (USA):

Even though there is a blank piece of wood on this cage, it was definitely the enclosure for a New Guinea Singing Dog at Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary (USA):

So many of these enclosures are pitifully small for active mammals. Roadside American junk. Capital of Texas Zoo (USA) had two New Guinea Singing Dogs in this puny homemade 'exhibit':

And here's a cement bunker that's maybe 12 feet wide for a New Guinea Singing Dog at G W Exotic Animal Park (USA) in 2015:

Another privately-owned American zoo, another ghastly little cage for a New Guinea Singing Dog. This one is at Hemker Park & Zoo (USA) in 2014 and the sign is almost as wide as the entire cage!!!

I doubt those ones at Fort Wayne were the only ones in the US. Dingoes are present in the private trade here (though less common than NGSD) and I've seen them at several roadside places (including DeYoung, when I thought you would have seen them).

They are not technically wolves or foxes, but I've seen Maned Wolves in 38 zoos. These long-legged mammals are fascinating to have in zoos as quite often it's possible to smell them before seeing them. They are stinky beasts!

Oklahoma City Zoo (USA) had Wild Dog Drive when I was there in 2008, with several canine species including Maned Wolves:

Maned Wolves and Giant Anteaters were in a mixed-species exhibit at Phoenix Zoo (USA) for many years. Here's a photo from 2011:

Los Angeles Zoo (USA) has maintained Maned Wolves in their collection for a long time, although the current exhibit is not very impressive.

@Green_mamba

Large, chain-link grassy yards are a typical Maned Wolf style exhibit at some places, such as at Louisville Zoo (USA) in 2010:

One imagines Maned Wolves being surrounded by tall pampas grass in the wild, but that was certainly not the case at Montgomery Zoo (USA) in 2010:

This spacious yard had Maned Wolves and Giant Anteaters together at Audubon Zoo (USA) in 2010:

I was shocked to see the Maned Wolf exhibit at John Ball Zoo (USA) when I was first there in 2012. It was more like a Snow Leopard enclosure! The small rocky island on the left was home to Saki Monkeys at that time, and you can see a Maned Wolf scaling the heights in its bizarre cage on the right.

@MountainBongo

Sunset Zoo (USA) is yet another zoo that combines Maned Wolves and Giant Anteaters together in the same exhibit. That combination obviously works.

Most of the exhibits at Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure (USA) are very basic, functional enclosures. Here's one for Maned Wolves:

@MGolka

Lee Richardson Zoo (USA) has had Maned Wolves for years. It's surprising to see just how flat many of these enclosures are, with no rolling terrain anywhere.

Here's a Maned Wolf at Alexandria Zoo (USA), with lots of thin trees in the exhibit:

San Diego Zoo (USA) has a Maned Wolf exhibit that has curious fencing that slopes inwards:

@pachyderm pro

I have only visited two zoos in France but both had Maned Wolves. Lille Zoo (France) combined Maned Wolves, Lowland Tapirs and Capybaras all together in a spacious yard.

And at Maubeuge Zoo (France), Maned Wolves had minimal electric fencing that separated them from a pool full of turtles.

Another European zoo with Maned Wolves, another excellent exhibit. This one is at Aachener Zoo (Germany):

Osnabruck Zoo (Germany) has an exhibit for Maned Wolves:

Predictably, a Swedish zoo has a massive Maned Wolf exhibit that contains a small lake in the middle. Parken Zoo (Sweden):

And Nordens Ark (Sweden) is just as impressive, with their Maned Wolf exhibit containing a meadow section and a forested area. It is one of very few zoos I've visited where there is a glass viewing area to see Maned Wolves. You can see two people watching a wolf in my 2022 photo:

Canidae:

Grey Wolves - 129 zoos
Maned Wolves - 38 zoos
Red Wolves - 22 zoos

AND...

Not included as part of my Canidae list, but interesting to track nonetheless:

New Guinea Singing Dogs - 17 zoos
Dingoes - 5 zoos

I must ask where you saw this. Something frustrating about my visit to San Diego Zoo is that despite traversing the entire zoo, I was somehow just unable to locate certain animals, specifically in the Asian Passage, and this is one of them. Or maybe I'm just an idiot.
