It was 43C yesterday, and last night dropped to just 28C - a couple degrees ABOVE average maximum daytime temperatures in January!! When you open your front door and walk outside, it feels like when you are baking a cake and you open the oven to check its progress and the blast of hot air hits you straight in the face.
The heat is dry and oppressive, there are no refreshing breezes, and the hot winds only pick up dust and pollen, making it even more unpleasant for hay fever sufferers.
There have already been a few bush fires, and with temperatures forecast to be over 40C until Friday evening, the prognosis isn't good. There might be a few scattered thunderstorms later, but paradoxically, this will make things worse, because there will be many lightning strikes: an arsonist or faulty electrical pole usually start fires in easily accessible areas, but lightning can strike and start a fire deep on the forest.
All in all, these days are pretty tense for Victorians. Apart from the threat of fires, hundreds of homes are without power and have no airconditioning, which of course could prove fatal to the most vulnerable. Commuting is an ordeal, since there are less trains, and they are travelling at reduced speeds - I won't be surprised if some tracks buckle today or tomorrow, or a train (and its passengers!) get stuck for a few hours in sweltering heat. It also means that the roads are even more congested because a lot of commuters are opting for their cars instead.
