So How About the Weather....

I read that you will be getting another arctic blast in late January - enjoy the warmth while you can.

Melbourne will have a serious heat wave next week and that usually means bush fires.

Mon - 35C
Tue - 41C
Wed - 35C
Thu - 40C

Yeah, can't say I'm really looking forward to the heat next week - hardly zoo visiting weather. I am going to watch the Australian Open on Tuesday though, think I will need copious amounts of iced mocha!

Aren't you doing a PhD at the moment? Since when do PhD students get leave to go to tennis? :p Back in my day... cue best skit ever:

Here in the mountains of Northeast Alabama, it got down to 4 degrees (F) during the coldest of the Polar Vortex. It isn't supposed to get this cold in the Southeastern US.

Madagascar is sunny, with some thunder in the back, I think around 35 degrees celsius and a soft breeze. Allthough wind can be quite hard sometimes, but the cyclone season just started here on the east coast :p. But fortunately nothing close to here.

Tonight we got a quarter inch of rain and it is suppose to freeze as it gets colder at night, thus creating the world's laargest speed skating track.

In my neck of the woods I'm sure they're doing just fine. We have some tough animals around here.

We had one warm day in Michigan and now it is freezing everything all over again. But then again by warm day I mean it was 2c where I live. Here in Michigan the animals are holding up fine since this weather happens all the time. For Pete's sake, I have pictures of African lions from zoos here in a foot and a half of snow.

I have read that winters used to be far more severe a generation ago, so this cold snap isn't anything extraordinary in the long term: it feels so cold because people have forgotten how it used to be in the old days. Toughen up guys! :D

Trust me, we are fine with the cold, it's just the fact that if we try to get anything done outside it's almost impossible because of the way the cold impacts it.

What's the weather like now? It's going to be between 35-40C every day until Friday here in Melbourne.

It was 43C yesterday, and last night dropped to just 28C - a couple degrees ABOVE average maximum daytime temperatures in January!! When you open your front door and walk outside, it feels like when you are baking a cake and you open the oven to check its progress and the blast of hot air hits you straight in the face.

The heat is dry and oppressive, there are no refreshing breezes, and the hot winds only pick up dust and pollen, making it even more unpleasant for hay fever sufferers.

There have already been a few bush fires, and with temperatures forecast to be over 40C until Friday evening, the prognosis isn't good. There might be a few scattered thunderstorms later, but paradoxically, this will make things worse, because there will be many lightning strikes: an arsonist or faulty electrical pole usually start fires in easily accessible areas, but lightning can strike and start a fire deep on the forest.

All in all, these days are pretty tense for Victorians. Apart from the threat of fires, hundreds of homes are without power and have no airconditioning, which of course could prove fatal to the most vulnerable. Commuting is an ordeal, since there are less trains, and they are travelling at reduced speeds - I won't be surprised if some tracks buckle today or tomorrow, or a train (and its passengers!) get stuck for a few hours in sweltering heat. It also means that the roads are even more congested because a lot of commuters are opting for their cars instead.

I went to the Australian Open yesterday, in Melbourne, so that was very warm! Was a great day though, just the oppressive heat wasn't much fun.

Unfortunately our house doesn't have air conditioning, so its hard to get it to a temperature different to what's outside. It's only dropped below 30C inside in the last hour...

Today will definitely be a beach day!
