So How About the Weather....

It was actually about three years ago (or two?) because I remember the zoo posting photos of the keepers in the snow. But it seems like at least ten years before that. I think it was on an Easter Sunday and I was actually out of town visiting family in Los Angeles and did not hear about it until about a month later when a customer was picking up photos from my lab and said these are from when it snowed. I replied, "It snowed?"

Today another customer of mine who is a docent at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum showed me some cool photos she took out there during the snow storm. Unfortunately, she is not on ZooChat so we will not get to see the photos.

After yesterday's storm, I went up this morning before work to a trailhead at the base of the mountains. Not as good as other spots I found out (lots of new housing developments - trail is just a narrow corridor with fencing on both sides) but I got a few pics. Nothing great, but here it is for what it is worth.

In The Upper Peninsula where my dad lives they just had a big 2 day blizzard. Here are some pics that keep getting shared on facebook(the Once a Yooper, Always a Yooper page) that are from near where he works. I bet Arizona Docent wishes he could have gotten pictures of this!:D:p

Oh wow! Those are some amazing pics. What's the weather like now, and what's the snow depth like?

In the last 2-3 days, we received more than 50mm of rain, which is fantastic. My lawn just might become green again.

Northland, the upper region of the North Island, has been declared a drought zone, and is looking very dry. Two other North Island regions (Waikato & Hawke's Bay) are also close to being declared drought zones. This is a photo from my parent's house (where I grew up and am currently staying) showing a very brown valley (drier than I have ever seen it). I realise this is nothing like an Aussie drought, but its pretty dry for NZ. There is no decent rain forecast for several more weeks.

That's a really beautiful view, but I must point out that that's how the Aussie countryside looks in the best of times! Melbourne gets only 600mm of rain a year.

By the time you get here, the grass will be green again and the billabongs will be much fuller than they have been in months.

Yeah, its a great view. The house is up on a hill, and we have views on three sides out on the valleys below. I think we get almost twice that rainfall here, but we haven't had any rain this month, and didn't have much in January either.

Yesterday we got another 4-6 inches of heavy snow which would have been double the amount if it was light and fluffy. If it was rain that would be approximately an 1 inch/100 mm.

Wow! That is crazy! What's the total snow depth now?

Also, what do you mean by 'heavy' snow?

Texas weather is going to get crazy again. Right now, it's in the 50s. On Sinday, it will be around 70. On Monday, it be around 80. Then it will tumble down to the lower 50s, then back to the upper 60s.
