I was really looking forward to the completion of the new exhibitionarea for Polar bears in the Sosto Zoo. When I heard that they had been handed over, I started planning the trip to Hungary so that I could finally see again Fiete and Lloyd, the German Polar bears. This was my first visit to Hungary in my life.
Last week, I visited the zoo 3 days in a row. Overall, I left with a positive experience, but there were few negative things too. The park is big and very beautiful. It is in an oak forest, mostly cool and shady for visitors and animals. The condition of the animals seemed good.
The function of the Polar komplex is very good, although for me the style was a bit artificial from the outside, a big cube building. Not very natural. However, inside and outside, they created good places to keep animals and other interesting attractions. The zoo also has two aquarium-tropical houses and a big bird aviary(it is also new).
I was most interested in Polar bears. There were also two show feedings during the day, which were held indoors in the 4 meters deep pool. Fiete and Schnesnaja were in the cooled hall, which also includes an outdoor enclosure. Lloyd was on the other side in another outer enclosure. He slept many times, but I also saw him walking. He is still quite thin, but he is visibly in better condition than in the pictures taken in Budapest. I was happy for him.
Fiete and Schnesnaja really enjoyed the show feeding. They played with each other several times. I can say Fiete became a handsome male and Schnesnaja is a pretty female (I saw her in the first time). I think it's a good idea that the Polar bears got a cooled hall, so they can escape the summer heat at any time.
The Spectacled bears were mostly asleep, but they looked good. Sadly it was not enough for me to idemtify them.
Finally, I also looked at Taquka, the Kodiak bear from Sweden, and his European companion, Felix. Taquka is impressive. What sizes! I also saw them playing in the pool one day. And I have seen them several times with wet fur.
In terms of Great apes, the zoo maintains two male Western lowland gorillas. Djumbah and Bubu came here from England many years ago. The live separately from each other. The larger outer enclosure is spacious, shady and bushy. It was nice.
The zoo also keeps Bornean orangutans. I saw a young male, Mr. Miyagi, whom I already knew from Münster. He changed a lot! Not a bald kid anymore. He was with a female, Maya. In the other enclosure was a lone older female. Probably Sabatini. During the 3 days I didn't see Guru either outside or inside. On the last day, I saw a person who spent some time photographing orangutans and asked him if he knew anything about Guru. He said that he often takes photos about the animals but unfortunately he didn't know what was going on with Guru, but he hadn't seen him for a few months either.
The thing that was negative is that there is no vegetation in the orangutan enclosure except grass, and there is also little shade, which is provided by the high walls of the enclosure depending on the time of day.
The 3 old Asian elephant cows Yasmin, Motki and Tanja are also in good condition. Yasmin is approaching 60 years old. They were calm. They bathed, first in the water, then in the dust. Here, too, the caretakers work in direct contact with the Asian elephants. The enclosure for the Asian elephants is nicely wooded, shady, and they also have a paddling pool.
I looked at the new male African elephant, Jambo, who recently arrived from Valencia. He was separately in the bull enclosure. On the other side of the elephant house were two females, Kwanza and her daughter Kimani in the bigger enclosure. I haven't seen Kibo, the youngest calf, during the 3 days. It's quite strange, a calf of this age would belong next to its mother.
(I was also looking for Pepe the sea lion to report about him to my friends in Munich, but I didn't see him either.)
