The Facebook page is currently down after Gilks 'rant' about gay marriages on his personal page. Lions have moved to new dire. Snow leopards, jags and tiger will be on show. They usually feed snows at 12 and others at 2:30 if I remember rightly. You could be unlucky and go on a starve day mind...

Well im going to go today anyway,as the forcast for the rest of the week looks a bit "iffy".
I don't condone what the owner says or gets upto,i just have never seen a Jaguar(the Chester one/ones were off display when I went last Thursday) or a Snow Leopard so i'm going to see those.:)

And to think the rants couldn't get any worse! Wouldn't it be good to read what he wrote, just for the laughs!

A screengrab is doing the rounds on Twitter if you really want to see the original post. Certainly not a polite expression of opposition.

Deeply unpleasant.

North West Evening Mail | News | Dalton zoo boss provokes outrage with ?same sex? comments

A prominent Dalton zoo boss caused outrage by describing same sex marriage as “abnormal” and “anti-natural” in a Facebook rant.

The comments by David Gill, owner of South Lakes Wild Animal Park in Dalton, have been branded homophobic and provoked a storm on social media.

In the post, uploaded at 10.18pm on Saturday, Mr Gill said watching the news had “made him sick.”

The post said: “The end of the world is certainly nigh when nature is twisted and society accepts totally abnormal and anti-natural behaviours in humans.

“Am I on my own in feeling so disgusted at same-sex marriage? Keep it off my TV and out of my sight!”

Mr Gill has now removed the post.

Ben Vollans, founder of charity Gay Older Brothers and Sisters which provides assistance to young gay people in coming out, said he was shocked by the comments.

He said: “It goes beyond an attack on same sex marriage, it is an attack on homosexuality. Young people can find it incredibly difficult to come out and things like this don’t help.”

The Evening Mail was contacted by several readers who expressed anger at the comments.

Katie Slater, from Barrow, said: “This is disgraceful coming from someone who deals with, and faces. the public each day. I bet hundreds of same-sex relationships pass through his gates daily.”

When asked to comment by the Evening Mail, Mr Gill defended his position on same-sex marriage, but said he “could have chosen his words more carefully.”

In a statement to the Evening Mail, he said: “My words have been taken out of context as always.

“I do not believe in same-sex marriage; it is as simple as that. I understood the civil issue and have accepted that, but I see marriage as something that is not decided by governments but a higher authority and nowhere in the Bible or in any other major religion can I see where this is accepted.

“Everyone has an opinion and a right to it, my concerns are that all but one comment made to me from the same-sex marriage supporters have been threatening, highly abusive with swear words and the like, and some sent offensive photos etc. Surely if those people wish to have their opinions it does not need to resort to this.

“Any implication taken of any other issue is not accepted by me and is my own personal view and does not reflect any view of the company and was focused totally on the marriage issue only.

“I accept that late at night when tired, posting on my personal page I could have chosen my words more wisely, however threats/abuse will not change the way my mind thinks and in fact sadly I feel that if the supporters of same sex marriage were more engaging in dialogue then differences can be eroded, but from the approach 99 per cent of responders had clearly a wall is built higher and thicker between the two sides of yes or no.

“It seems to me the majority of the Facebook responders have taken a more general view of the comments as opposed to the fact it was limited to the marriage issue. I hope this clarifies my position.

“Worryingly many people wrote in support of my view, but said they were the silent voice and most stated they would not dare to post anything because of the way others react to a different view.

“It seems then that the winners in our new social media society are those who can use abuse and threats to force their opinions and will on everyone else and that cannot be a healthy way forward for the future.”

He says his words have been "taken out of context" and that they were "limited only to the marriage issue" - but the following two screenshots do not make it seem that way....

Worth noting, these are the *edited* posts - not a clue what he originally said before editing them.

The edit is bad enough, I dread to think what he said in the first place.....

Maybe he should give up South Lakes and go and work for Noah's Ark Zoo Farm if he's so bothered about normality in the eyes of God.

I've always been a bit dubious about this place but would have probably visited out of curiosity had I been in the area. No danger of that now, I would never dream of giving him my money.

According to this update to the news coverage posted by Shirokuma above, the police are now investigating threats and comments made against Gill online, as well as the original comments by Gill.

As such, possibly wise for us to tread carefully around this one?

North West Evening Mail | News | Police probe Dalton zoo owner?s gay marriage comments

I don't think there is anything to worry about, no one has posted anything threatening or illegal on here.

Forget biblical interpretation, most people have only ever been exposed to an edited, mis-translated form of the bible, but parrot those mistakes without humility as long as they fit their own view of the world. I say that as someone who very much believes in god and the importance of biblical scripture.

Given it's clear he thinks that sexual orientation is somehow learned behaviour (despite research to the contrary), I hope his kids are lucky enough to grow up straight, otherwise they're in for a miserable adolescence with a parent like that. Your dad thinking you're 'against nature', believe me, is how to screw a kid's life up well into their 20s. Your parents are supposed to love you no matter what.

Its awful how polarising things have become. The heavy-handedness of police involvement only serves to make the 'silent majority', believe themselves even more marginalised and persecuted for their beliefs. As much as his choice to make those comments publicly and without regard for who they will affect (and how) disgusts me, I defend his right to say them, and peoples' right to comment on them.

Chester Zoo's Jaguars were not off-show when you visited, its just that they have the choice of if people see them,un-like the ones that have to live at the great and wonderful SLWAP which is by all accounts of Mr Gill's followers the best zoo in the world!!

Sorry auto correct and fat fingers - should have said 'lions have moved into their new enclosure on new site' the Facebook site is back up again . I've no doubt what he said will cause the zoo damage. I believe he has several sons - I hope for their sakes they don't to turn out to be gay. Slightly odd that he maintains being gay is against the bible teachings yet he doesn't seem to have a problem having an affair with someone else's wife! Each to their own!

Wow shocking stuff! Shame he deleted the Facebook page as that's where I go when I have popcorn in the house :D

The thought did cross my mind. It also brought to mind the occasion when he was alleged (I only have press reports to go on) to have effectively told a pregnant keeper to have an abortion to keep her job. Glad he's looking out for society's morals.

Now going to try to stay out of this to avoid getting this site into trouble! Suffice to say he's not a personal hero of mine...

Well I wonder what he would have thought if he knew he was sitting next to me in his cafeteria 10 years or so ago ? At least I was there on my ABWAK card so didn't pay on either of my two days, so he didn't get any entry money from me.
I also hope his children don't have to tell him they are gay, when my partner told his parents at the age of 27 his father replied "I always knew you weren't my son" he still hasn't forgotten it, even though his father came round in the end. As far as the other comments he is said to have made and his adultery as usual it seams that as long is the sinner is heterosexual it's OK being Homosexual is the biggest sin of all.

The Facebook page is now back, along with his adoring fans remarking on how brilliant he is... The mind boggles tbh!

I wonder if they will now close on a Sunday...

Well I may not have been coming on here for long Mr zoogiraffe, but when the lady at the ticket office apologizes for the Jaguars not being on show today, and the 2 Chester zoo staff at the Jaguar exhibit stood next to a "No entry!" sign at the door ensuring no one went in might have given me a good basis for saying they were "off show";)
(They were doing some work on the Orangutan enclosure entrance and enclosure which was causing a few bangs and clatters which I assume would cause a bit of distress to the Jaguars.)

I am not one of Mr Gill's followers, and I find his latest remarks as not very well thought out and pretty damaging to his already fragile reputation, but I went yesterday and had a very good day. I admit that some of his mixed exhibits leave a lot to be desired, and he has the misfortune of having his paddocks on steep slopes so he cant put the hoof-stock out in the wetter months, but on the whole most of the animals looked in decent sized enclosures and looked relaxed and reasonably happy.:)

The house is closed because they are building a new ant exhibit. The young pair of jaguars should have been visible in the south enclosure and the old jaguar is in the north enclosure by the toilets and coffee shop. but as always it depends if you are lucky or not.

I never tend to believe the staff at the pay desk, because they don't always know the true facts,as Bongorob has already said the Jaguar House was closed on weekdays during march for the construction of a new Leaf-cutter Ant exhibit,in fact it will probably be closed for the next few weeks because the work is behind schedule!I would guess that because the House was closed they were telling the visitors that Jaguars were off-show,as its easier to say that than have alot of complaints from people not seeing them, but THEY WILL HAVE had excess to both the outside enclosures, even if the House was shut,so its just pot look if you see them, which it is even if the house is open!

Also I never said you were a follower of Mr Gill as that is a fate that I wouldn't even wish on my worst enemy!

Someone following Mr Gill with a shovel and bucket (or wheelie bin) could quickly collect enough bu****it to start a fertiliser business ;)

Well it did look a nice enclosure on the right hand side of the Jaguar house, the other one you had to look through mesh (which I hate as I like to take photos which really need an un-obscured view).I might have stayed and waited longer for a glimpse if I hadn't been given slightly duff info. Heyho,i'm sure I will go back again soon as I was very impressed with Chester zoo.
No offence taken on the Mr Gill following front,i'm neither for the guy or against him.:)
