And has already been mentioned here females in calf in the wild would separate themselves to give birth alone and after birth stand over calf and for several days more or less stay in the same spot for as long as the calf needs to get up and go. After that she will go back to the safety of the harem herd … with other females and calves of varying ages and stage of development.

Thus it is unusual for a female giraffe to have to have to deal with another calf in her spot close to her own and that a giraffe mother will than act in the way described here is not unheard of.

Exactly- you have described more effectively what I was trying to explain. :)

Well I have just spent an interesting 20 minutes having a look at there facebook page looking for an update about Belle the giraffe, quite a few people are asking for an update all of which have been ignored! Its almost as if she was never born by the way that they are ignoring all the questions, but then this is just what happen to Kadi(Tiger) just disappeared off the face of the world. So how about manning up YORIK and telling the truth about what happened for once, instead of hiding and pretending that it will all go away if you keep your mouth closed on the subject!Because as they say the truth is always out there and its only a matter of time before it will get out!

Well we all knew it was coming but Belle was put to sleep today :(

Has anyone from this forum actually attended SLWP since this is supposed to have occurred. ( I may have been the last one on the 1st April? )What sources are there for this news? Surely if it has happened they cant keep it covered up for long, its not as though there are lots of spare paddocks/ sheds at SLWP that she can supposedly be kept in. Every spare centimetre has got something crammed onto it.:p
And is there any news on naming of the male Giraffe calf?

We were going to go over Easter at some point but recent events have put me off. We live locally, so I'll ask around and see if anyone I know is going, and have then report back on the number of baby giraffes

I have posted a few comments on their page and sent privates messages too, none of which have been given a response. Surely its in the parks interest to make comments. I wonder how they would respond if they received lots of posts and messages from the community here. Surely if there are lots of comments then they will be forced to comment.

I got some information from a member of the public who visited yesterday. She confirmed that there was only one giraffe calf on show that she saw.

It's a disgrace really. The guy doesn't do himself any favours. With the amount of scandal involved at this place it's a wonder that a journalist hasn't got the facts together and published them. How does he get away with it?

One word answer - Money

I received a message via Facebook chat this morning confirming belle is "no longer with us". I asked why they haven't put the information on their Facebook page the response was "We have told anyone who has enquired about her, it is very sad we were all hoping and praying for a different outcome". I then said that wasn't true as many people have asked about belle in the parks Facebook page and they have either been unanswered or deleted from view.

I'm imagining you won't be able to post on said Facebook page much longer....

I was blocked ages ago for asking about Kadi. They can block you from direct posts but you can still make comments on others posts. Unless I have been unblocked but I doubt it.

I don't usually bother wasting time 'South Lakes bashing' but if they were able to just make a straightforward statement about what happened, it would stop a lot of the secrecy, intruge and critisism that arises surrounding what was effectively an accident- even if it was partly(?) due to overcrowding. They wouldn't have to answer, or avoid, or block peoples' questions either. But then nothing there is done in the simplest or most open fashion as they have made so many bad mistakes that they are fearful of being honest about anything now.

Why Yorik?
Alas you would have to ask Mr Gill why he chose the name Yorik,to come on to this site and pretend not to be himself!I suppose its one of those things we will never know what goes through the mans mind we will only know what comes out of his mouth!!

The inquest of Sarah McClay will begin on 14th July
BBC News - Sarah McClay: Tiger attack death inquest date set

If you go to this link and then to the wild animal park link, it seams the place is now called the South Lakes safari Zoo and is the first in the world. Wonders never cease, so many firsts for this place.

Also wasn't yorik the court jester in Shakespeare's hamlet? reduced to a skull I seam to remember.

Indeed Dean,

Alas, poor Yorik!, I knew him

I didn't know DG was actually Yorik on here until Zoogiraffe mentioned it. I do recall writing something about SLWP (baby rhino viewing charges?) a while ago when Yorik was posting here, and I had to give up with the conversation as no matter what I wrote something about he would read it wrongly and think the world was against SLWP.

Just a few thoughts regarding this thread, firstly I do not claim to be a great fan of Mr.Gill or his zoo. I started to visit it in its early days when it was a very modest collection housed in very much homemade enclosures and followed its progress with interest as time progressed, I always have an admiration for anybody who has the guts to open a zoo, a very precarious business to be in. I did not visit this zoo for the first time last year, the reason being that they barred me from their facebook page the one and only time I ever posted on it enquiring about Kadi the tiger cub, if I am not good enough to contribute to their facebook page, then my pound notes are not good enough to go into their till, as far as I am concerned. As for the zoo itself, as it has grown over the years, adding more and more animals to its collection in quite a small acreage, it has continued to build enclosures for them , still very much in a homemade way, perhaps too many animals housed in too small a space, although I see that the zoo is expanding and building new enclosures, hopefully this will improve things for the animals themselves. As for the baby giraffe, Belle, very sad indeed, it certainly looks like she died because the current giraffe house is too small, perhaps she was born too soon, if born later in the new giraffe accommodation, perhaps things would have been different, we will never know. Even though I am not one for holding back what I say, I do think, to a certain extent members of zoochat are at times going a bit over the top with their "South Lakes bashing", although I agree, a lot of the criticism is justified, it was interesting to read one member's opinion and concern about the unfortunate accident relating to Belle, although the same person completely agreed and condoned recently the decision of Copenhagen Zoo to shoot Marius!.As for Mr. Gill himself, yes he is very outspoken, takes one to know one perhaps, but I do not see what relevance the man's private life has to be discussed on zoochat, and as for his recent opinion on gay marriages, which I have no real opinion of myself as it does not concern me or interest me in any way,it should be remembered that Mr. Gill posted these remarks on his own facebook page, not that of the zoo, I also note that a few gay members of zoochat were quite right to be upset at his opinion, but perhaps they are using the Belle incident and criticising the zoo itself as a vehicle to get at Mr. Gill personally for making homophobic remarks.
