Just a few thoughts regarding this thread, firstly I do not claim to be a great fan of Mr.Gill or his zoo. I started to visit it in its early days when it was a very modest collection housed in very much homemade enclosures and followed its progress with interest as time progressed, I always have an admiration for anybody who has the guts to open a zoo, a very precarious business to be in. I did not visit this zoo for the first time last year, the reason being that they barred me from their facebook page the one and only time I ever posted on it enquiring about Kadi the tiger cub, if I am not good enough to contribute to their facebook page, then my pound notes are not good enough to go into their till, as far as I am concerned. As for the zoo itself, as it has grown over the years, adding more and more animals to its collection in quite a small acreage, it has continued to build enclosures for them , still very much in a homemade way, perhaps too many animals housed in too small a space, although I see that the zoo is expanding and building new enclosures, hopefully this will improve things for the animals themselves. As for the baby giraffe, Belle, very sad indeed, it certainly looks like she died because the current giraffe house is too small, perhaps she was born too soon, if born later in the new giraffe accommodation, perhaps things would have been different, we will never know. Even though I am not one for holding back what I say, I do think, to a certain extent members of zoochat are at times going a bit over the top with their "South Lakes bashing", although I agree, a lot of the criticism is justified, it was interesting to read one member's opinion and concern about the unfortunate accident relating to Belle, although the same person completely agreed and condoned recently the decision of Copenhagen Zoo to shoot Marius!.As for Mr. Gill himself, yes he is very outspoken, takes one to know one perhaps, but I do not see what relevance the man's private life has to be discussed on zoochat, and as for his recent opinion on gay marriages, which I have no real opinion of myself as it does not concern me or interest me in any way,it should be remembered that Mr. Gill posted these remarks on his own facebook page, not that of the zoo, I also note that a few gay members of zoochat were quite right to be upset at his opinion, but perhaps they are using the Belle incident and criticising the zoo itself as a vehicle to get at Mr. Gill personally for making homophobic remarks.
